@Oliviapope: I think the only way that works is to set your own alarm and have her go in the middle of the night 1-2 times. Or if you go to bed late at night (11pm or later) you might have success putting her on the potty before you go to bed.

I have 2 kids, 3 and 5 years old. The 5 year old still needs a pull-up at night, and the 3 year old night trained herself right after she day trained a year ago. She hasn't needed a pull-up at night in many months. The only thing that works with my 5 year old is waking her to pee at least once. But it has to be around 1-2 am or she doesn't make it through the night. Over the summer, I tried doing it before I went to sleep at 11pm, and then she had about a 50% success rate of being dry.

Just in the past few weeks, my 5 year old has started waking dry about half the time on her own---with no wakeups from me. SO I'm hoping she's finally getting there by herself. It's actually nice for me seeing how different my own girls are--I literally did *nothing* for night training for me 3 year old, but her body is just different and did it on her own immediately. It kind of takes the pressure off me as a parent to do something because since I can clearly see it depends on the kid's body, I feel more relaxed about the process, if that makes sense.

@bhbee: This. I was afraid to try no pull ups but he just peed when he woke up because he could.

I’d give it a try and see how it goes.

@Shantuck: My son did the same thing. When I changed him in the morning, the pull-up was warm. On a Friday night, I put him in underwear and he was dry in the morning. He had an accident a few days later, but he had refused to go to the restroom right before bed.

DH works nights and on his off days, he has heard DS go to the restroom overnight.

@bhbee: This is exactly what my son does. Not ready to drop night pullups yet (just dropped day pullups!!) but I noticed that if I dont take him potty THE MOMENT we get out of bed he will just pee in the pullup because it's there (before we take it away for the day). Drives me crazy. :P

One other thing that could be worth checking - if you go in right before she usually wakes, is she dry? My son appeared wet every morning, but he was going right when he got up so was just wet by the time we saw him. But capable of staying dry that long and pretty quickly able to get it when we started taking him ASAP upon waking. Might help you know whether she’s physically capable of holding all night. If she only wet once overnight before, it could be a morning issue. And even a few weeks can make a difference in their motivation and understanding!

When my son was 4, he came home one day and said none of his friends wore pull-ups and that he wanted to stop. At that point, he was waking up wet every morning so I had assumed he still needed it. My husband convinced me to let him try that night and he woke up dry and has every day since (minus a couple accidents over the years). I think he was peeing in the pull-up because he could... not because he needed to. I learned that waking up wet isn't an indication of lack of readiness.

ETA: You could buy one of those pee pads for the first couple nights while you are trying it out to make the clean up go smoothly if she ends up wetting the bed.

We cloth diaper, so we use cloth pull ups that we call "night night undies". He feels when he's wet and wakes up 95% of the time to go to the bathroom. He will finish peeing in the potty, change, and will go back to bed. Because my 8 month old is still in diapers, it's no big deal to throw the pull up the diaper laundry. Would work for you? I can find the link

Similar to above, we only stopped using the pull up when my son was waking up dry for about a week. I fully expected this to be way later than it was, but he was about 3.75 when it happened. If she’s interested in trying, I’d let her and remind her that kid’s bodies aren’t all ready at the same time so she doesn’t feel ashamed if it’s not the right time. I’d also double make her bed- waterproof liner, sheets, waterproof liner, sheets. That way if she does have an accident you can just pull off the top set and not have to remake the bed on the MOTN.

We only pulled the Pull-ups at night when my son was waking up dry every morning... if she's still wet every day it might be tricky... I would seriously cut back the fluids before bed. Use the bathroom right before bed time... and i'm sure you have a waterproof cover already, but you could do that method of having the bed made twice in case she wakes up wet, you can just pull back the sheets & waterproof layer to another set of sheets/waterproof layer below and get right back to sleep!

Our 4 yo daughter also woke up wet almost every morning in a pull-up. We decided it was time to just go for it and while we certainly had some middle of the night changes for a few weeks, it didn't last too long. We also still try to limit fluid intake before bed but we aren't as restrictive now as we were at first!

We haven't done this with my almost 6 year old, but my guess is that she's not physically capable yet of waking at night to pee. From what I understand, the body starts producing an enzyme that will wake them to pee in the night, and until her body starts producing it, it's just not going to happen.

That said, if you really do want to go away from pull-ups, I'd probably recommend limiting liquids within the 2 hours before bed, and also waking her in the middle of the night to pee... it might help.

Hi all -

My 4 yo daughter is wanting to stop wearing pull ups at night. She learned recently that some friends don't wear them and we've been talking about it. I understand from her pediatrician that it's a kid by kid thing, and that it's whether her body is ready or not, but I am not opposed to helping her try.

I couldn't find much guidance on how to do this though - any suggestions? We've tried before, and haven't been too successful, and I was fine with her going back to pullups so she accepted them when I offered again.

Currently she wakes up wet every morning. In the past when we've tried, she's wet the bed once overnight. I have a mattress protector on her bed and also bought the flat ones that lay over the sheet. She's got new undies she's excited to wear overnight. She doesn't have accidents during the day. She does drink a fair amount in the evening (a few small half full sippy cups of milk.)

Any success stories or things to avoid? Thanks so much.
