@meredithNYC: thanks for weighing in! I think I am more interested in suburban with a big yard since we have 3 little kids. Im not a city gal! I'll PM you if I have any questions about certain cities. :)

I'm from Indianapolis, though I grew up in the city on the East side (in a little historic area called Irvington). I moved away from the Midwest after college because personally, I was in search of the experience of living in a bigger city. Plus, the politics are not exactly my cup of tea.

That said, I did love growing up there and there's no denying that the cost of living is amazing. I went to Catholic schools because the city schools are not great.

If I moved back, I would move to the city, for sure. But again, that's in large part because I would have the option of private school. My personal dream neighborhood is Meridian Kessler (near Northside). I love the proximity to downtown and the relative diversity compared to the further reaches of the North and South sides.

Greenwood is fine and has good schools, etc. It is also very suburban, as is Carmel. I'm not really into the cookie cutter thing and excessive traffic, so neither are ideal for me. But absolutely, a lot of people find a ton to like about those areas.

My Husband and I lived in downtown Indy for 1 year. We loved it. Downtown is pretty neat and we enjoyed Broadripple as well. We didn't have babies at the time though so can't advise regarding those aspects.

@littlejoy: Oh, I would love to pick your brain for a little bit! Maybe we can message? I am also in the PNW, and we are getting ready to sell our house and move (our home is only 1200 sqft and we have 3 kids!). However, the kind of house we would need (4 beds), would EASILY be 400k here. There, we could buy a BEAUTIFUL home for what it would cost to by a fixer-upper shack here. So, I guess that at least is a draw. A big home for my whole family that doesn't cost very much.

But I was born and raised in the PNW. I love the weather, the mountains, the water (our city is on the Sound and boating is our summer hobby). I can't imagine moving to the Midwest! This is just my perception (never been there), but I feel like there isn't as much to do? Especially outdoorsy type stuff. And the thought of different weather than what we have here terrifies me!

How close is it to the nearest body of water? Is there good shopping nearby? (I need a mall in close proximity :-P)

It seems, just from research I've done online, that Carmel is a higher cost of living area compared to the other surrounding Indy areas? Is this right?

Thanks for all your input!

I grew up in Indianapolis (until I was 27). My grandparents live in Greenwood ... my parents live in Carmel (north side).

It was a good enough place to grow up. The further south (and east) you go, you'll find a little more "country folk", ha. There are areas with proximity to the interstates, like Broad Ripple that are absolutely lovely. BR specifically has an amazing art scene, and wonderful restaurants. A TON to do. You'd have to be careful when it comes to schools - most people in this area choose private schools.

I did appreciate how diverse Indianapolis is ... you wouldn't think Indiana would have a lot of diversity, but it totally does! Plus, it's close to Cincinnati (IKEA), and Chicago ... Michigan has a TON of water. We'd spend weekends up at the dunes & lake Michigan. You can easily drive south to beautiful landscapes & weekend getaways.

We live in the PNW now, and it would take A LOT for us to move back. If we did move back, we'd buy in Broad Ripple, or Carmel. The schools in Carmel are AMAZING, and it's growing in the arts & culture scene.

Living in Portland, the houses we're saving for now are $350k-$425k, and those same houses in Indianapolis (even in the great areas) would be like $225k at the most.

@LibbyLou: I was reading that Carmel and Zionsville are the best places to live in IN. Carmel seems like one of the most expensive places to live, but the homes and schools are beautiful. I think it's maybe a 40 minute commute from where my DH would potentially be working?

I'm in the PNW now, and have lived here my whole life. We live in a city, but I grew up very rurally. I don't know if I could ever get used to not being by the water. That'd be the hardest adjustment.

Indy is part of my territory and I love it! Granted I am comparing it to other Midwest large cities. My old boss lives in greenwood and loves it but his kids went to private catholic school so I can't comment on the schools.
I have a girlfriend who lives in Carmel and adores it. They have a running trail and lots of fun activities from what I hear from her.
Downtown is cool, there are a lot of walkways to get everywhere in the cold weather. I went over for a football game last year and it was nice not having to brave the elements.

I think it all depends on what you are use to. I live in a big city now but grew up very rurally so the suburbs that are a bit more farm like don't phase me.

I could get a job in that area but DH said no. I think if I had a lot of trouble finding a job on the east coast I would consider moving to the mid west. Though, as someone who lived in PA and now WA, I've never been exposed to tornadoes (well tiny ones that touched down for like a few seconds) and that thought of being in an area that has them kinda freaks me out. (Though, my DH tells me I freak out about a lot of things and I'm on the more cautious side.) ETA: Oh, I do live in Seattle and the one worry is that we are close to Mt. Rainier (the volcano)... so far our 7 years of living here, I haven't seen anything. My friends and family on the east coast managed to feel an 'earthquake' before I did.

I've been to Indianapolis (well, outside of it) for work many times. It's definitely more rural than what I'm used to. When I was there, DH came with me and we drove 3 hours to visit Chicago, so that was nice. My brother lives in Michigan so I would be close to him. He travels 9 hours to PA each holiday and I believe Indianpolis would be an extra hour or so to travel home. For someone who used to do road trips from Seattle to San Fran (14 hour road trip), 9-10 hours to visit home isn't all that bad. Though, we do have twins now so I'm sure long road trips are more difficult and take a whole lot more planning. It is much better than doing a 42 hour trip (without stopping) or 5-6 hour flight. I do hate that the only way I can get home is to fly.

I don't know anything else about it though and I'm interested in what others say.

I went to grad school about an hour outside of Indy (in Bloomington). I really liked the area and it seemed like it would be a good place for a family. If I had received a job offer in the area we probably would have stayed! And like @avivoca: said, it's really easy to get to other major cities in the midwest. We did a lot of roadtrips while we were there.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I live a couple of hours south but I think @MrsRCCar lives near there. If you are friends with KJPugs on FB/IG you might want to ask her too. It's within driving distance of Chicago, Cincinnati, Louisville, and tons of cities in Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio.

Specifically south Indianapolis, like Greenwood and surrounding areas? Can you tell me much about it? Good place to raise a family? Good schools? Are there nearby cities that are better?

(DH was offered a job in this area, we said no, but now he is [very casually] doing research and maybe second-guessing his response. I would love to get any info you may have. We've never even been to Indiana (or anywhere close to it!).
