I wouldn't bring up negotiation in the interview (per ask a manager). But you can ask if you are offered the position. Typically, yes, there isn't much negotiation in govie jobs. Though you can try to get more experience counted.

I work for higher education. You can always negotiate based on your skills and need. if it is a government job usually they have pay scales based on your title so I would suggest trying to google the pay scale based on the name of your union and it takes some digging but you can see what the top salary would be based on your title. It doesnt hurt to ask.

I think where the negotiating can come in is in how many years of prior experience they accept, so where you start at on the pay scale since it goes up in years. I don't think it would be rude to ask, but I doubt there is any point. (I'm a teacher in CA.)

I don't work in HR, but in the two different districts/counties I've worked in as a teacher, the pay scale is pretty much set in stone based on education and experience. At the same time, I can't imagine it would hurt that much to ask about it.

We are working in relocating to the central coast (CA) & are applying for jobs. I'm interviewing next week with the county office of education over in that area. We know going into this we will be taking pretty big pay cuts bc it's a much more desirable area to live in. However, they are also desperate for speech pathologists so I was wondering if I get offered a job, is it worth asking if the salary is negotiable? I know the pay scale is negotiated with the union so is it something I should ask HR still? I don't want to come off showing bad etiquette but if it's something that may be negotiable then I also don't want to not ask! Thoughts??
