Hi! I went a couple years ago with my husband.

We went to the Great Wall at Mutianyu, it was less crowded than other areas and had a fun slide you rode down. We booked a driver through our hotel very easily. He drove us, waited with the other drivers and then met us when it was time to leave. We even stopped at a small locals only type restaurant on the way home and he ordered for us. I have no idea what I ate, but it was delicious.

We ate dinner at Da Dong one night for the Roast ("Peking") duck - which I was certain I would not like - but I loved. There are numerous locations but we went to the one in a mall near Wangfujing.

I recommend the Summer Palace too. I can answer anything else, I can't remember what else we did or where else we ate right now!

I am really disappointed we didn't get to make it up to see the terracotta soldiers while we were there. I don't know how much free time he'll have though, because from what I understand it's a bit of a ride to get there.

I made a very brief trip to Beijing almost 10 years ago, but I definitely agree with seeing the Forbidden Palace, the Great Wall (it was way more impressive than what I imagined), and the Summer Palace was a nice little side trip. Also, I’m not sure how polluted Beijing gets these days, but he may want to consider taking a face mask, just in case. We live in Asia and my DH’s office recommended N95 or N99 to truly filter out particles.

Hi there! We went to Beijing a few years ago and had a great experience with a tour company called Catherine Lu Tours (http://catherinelutours.com/tours/beijing-private-tours/).

I have been to Beijing 3x teaching and directing summer school at a prestigious international school. They would spoil us with all kinds of perks. So there is a spot to go to Great Wall where you can ride back down in a little go cart or toboggan. Also there is an indoor water park along the way. Summer Palace is popular tour that I really enjoyed. Massages are cheap and so good. People like to put those cups on their back for circulation but it makes you look like you have hickeys on your back for a few days. People like to eat hot pot there. Summer is hot. Bring a cloth to wet and cool yourself. If I think of more, I’ll write soon. Oh and Chinese acrobats are very cool. This is all making want to go back and visit. Oh and the air quality is not that great so bring asthma meds if needed although we didn’t need them. I went to forbidden city but I don’t remember much except that there was a starbucks there!!! Tiananmen Square is still heartbreaking.

@kiddosc: O and wear good walking shoes on the Great Wall because that is not a smooth level surface at all! I walked it in heels because it was a surprise change of schedule from meetings, and it was not good!

I have been to both of those, and they are absolutely worth it. I unfortunately don't have a tour recommendation because I was visiting my universities branch campus, and they provided a translator/guide.

My one recommendation if he hasn't heard this yet, bring your own toilet paper. Almost nowhere supplies it, but that might not be as detrimental to a guy as a girl :P

My husband is headed to Beijing this weekend and will have a few days for site seeing on his trip. In true husband fashion, he’s done no planning and asked if I’d ask around with my co-workers that had been to Beijing to see if there were any specific tours they would recommend. I figured I'd ask here too in case anyone had any great tours to recommend. He has interest in going to see the Great Wall and the Forbidden City specifically if anyone has tips.
