@babycanuck: yep I also second the idea of sectioning off your wheels into another bag do they don't go AWOL during transit! Some of the ground staff just hurl the bags around so it's little wonder they come out in one piece. I also just flew between Canada and New York with a travel stroller recently and they let me connect it together with a bungee cord. If that helps at all! Definitely a PITA to travel solo with, but it's worth it for the lying flat and sleeping comfort factor!

@babycanuck: I totally hear you! If you want the most budget friendly option, my best advice would be to ziptie the pieces together in the big canvas bag (that is such a good idea you had!!) and put all the wheels in the cases from your big travel bag inside the drawstring one. It'll be free and as long as you give yourself extra time, you can do it. I've just gotten lazy about wanting to make travel as easy as possible! ;)

@PinkElephant: thanks for this - I am going to look at what it will cost me to check it in the bugaboo travel bag. I'm headed to Chicago on my own, and I can babywear totally for the transport, but going for 11 days I need a stroller while I'm there. I saw poor reviews of the Gate Check bags you can get at buy buy baby for the reason you noted - wheel off therefore cutting a hole in the bag. If I was at all handy with a sewing machine I would make myself a giant drawstring bag out of fabric.

eta: unfortunately I don't have a decent travel stroller and won't be able to get one until I start back at work with an income :meh:

@babycanuck: I do. As others have said, it's two piece fold. I travelled with it once as a checked bag and at least twice as a gate-check, and really advise against it gate checking.

The first time I gate checked the seat and chassis separately (in the plastic bags provided). The seat fit in just fine, but the chassis was a tight squeeze. I had to remove the wheels and put them in the basket under the stroller; sometime during flight one tore the bag and got loose. Fortunately a kind ground crew person went back into the belly of the airplane and searched til he found it for me.

After that experience, I had a heavy duty canvas bag made to gate check the two pieces together. It was really unweildy - nearly impossible to pack them in properly while wrangling the LO the stroller was meant to contain, then once it was zipped closed, the pieces did not stay neatly stacked, and the bag was REALLY difficult to carry. In this case, zip tying might have helped.

This was for trips when a travel stroller wouldn't have cut it (snow covered ski town in the French Alps in the dead of winter for a wedding - so we we were dealing with snow and I couldn't babywear in a formal gown; and Hawaii with lots of off roading needed (and was afraid to babywear a newborn in the heat)). If there is ANY WAY you can manage with a travel stroller or by baby wearing, I'd really recommend it! I know you didn't ask that, but I'm saying it anyway, because the stroller was a pretty big source of stress when I was traveling alone with one or both of my kiddos. Or if you need the stroller on the other end, maybe check it at the counter and rent a stroller/baggage cart to use as a stroller in the airport!

@oliviaoblivia: @Nutella: @tinyperson: @Cole:
thanks mamas! I have the Bugaboo travel bag but it's massive so I'm going to just find a drawstring bag somewhere. Worst case scenario I'll take some green painter's tape and just wrap it together as needed. They might not let me take zip ties (or bungee cord) through security going from Canada to the US.

It will only protect from dirt but Target sells a stroller bag in the travel section. It's basically an enormous drawstring bag but it's nice to not worry about it getting dirty or losing anything.

It only does a two piece fold...I've never travelled with it and probably wouldn't!

I used to use a luggage strap and put it in one of those giant plastic bags the airline gives you. But then it got scuffed so I bought a travel bag. My old bugaboo could only fold once you took off the seat. So not ideal for one handed or frequent collapsing! But still awesome for bumpy roads etc.

I keep an original Cam at my mom's house so I've never traveled with it, but it only has the two piece fold.

Stupid question because Google is failing me huge. Can you collapse the stroller with the seat attached? What do you do when travelling if you don't have the gigantic travel case? Debating whether I need to zip tie the pieces together at the airport.
