We just cut our cable and we haven't replaced it with anything yet. My husband is planning on buying a digital antenna for a few basic channels.

We did! We paid a guy to install our digital antenna and we get something like 24 channels (the basic Canadian ones like CBC/CTV/City and some basic American ones like NBC/ABC and then some very random ones), I understand that you don't know what channels you will get until the antenna scans after being installed.
We have Netflix and had SHOMI but that's done and we never watched it. By husband has NHL game centre live and we bought MLB postseason on apple TV to watch it.
The real issue is news.

@ALV91711: I think this is the one we have: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B01E6U9E4C?psc=1

I used http://tvfool.com to find out roughly what channels we should be able to get depending on an indoor antenna or an outdoor one. The one above just sticks on our wall behind the tv. We do have to move it for certain channels and our new house isn't as close to the channel hubs or whatever as our old house, but it's fine for $20.

I also totally forgot but we do stream from HGTV and the CTV GO app as well. Lots of channels do this without a subscription to a tv package. You just have to watch things the day after. We use a chromecast to stream from our phones or computer.

As for news and sports, we get more than enough news with CBC and global. CNN does streaming online as well I think. We get hockey and football via CBC and CTV but not baseball or basketball...though I think you might if you can pull in CityTV on the antenna? We watched the entire Olympics on CBC in the summer!

@muffinsmuffins: @gentlelunette: Where do you get a digital antenna?

I think I may look into doing this and cutting cable. We've talked about ditching it but just haven't taken that leap.

If news and sports are important it seems next near impossible (we are sports and news only pretty much!!). Frustrating, maybe someday it'd be easier!

Same as @muffinsmuffins: We have a digital antenna so we get the very very basic channels. We have Netflix and CraveTV, we watch them through AppleTV. We sometimes stream from our laptops online.

We have a $20 antenna for CBC, CTV, global, TVO, etc. plus Netflix. We used to have Crave and Shomi but cancelled and now Shomi doesn't exist. We rent movies from Cineplex with points. At first it was a huge difference with no specialty channels and I missed it but a year onwards, I don't mind it. There are definitely better options for US cable cutters, and we have considered a hide IP service, but haven't felt the need. Worth the money saved for sure IMO.

We are considering getting rid of cable in March when our current contract is up. Canadian bees, tell me about cutting cable? What other service do you use? How do you watch news and sports?? Any tips/tricks? Netflix is an obvious yes but what else do I need to know?
