@MsBadger: that's an interesting read. I love that paragraph:
So, different studies have come to different conclusions on this question, but let me simplify: Don’t introduce gluten before 4 months of age (and there are lots of good reasons for this beyond the celiac issue). Waiting too long beyond 6-7 months may increase celiac risk, but more importantly, delaying your baby’s first taste of gluten doesn’t seem to be protective.

@MrsScottish: I just had to remind myself to not lick my fingers. We never spoon shared no matter what he had (seems to increase risk for the child's teeth - if I remember correctly) so that helped. If we wants to share his Pretzel I'll tell him something along the lines of "ah thank you but mummy can't have that" and usually he's satisfied with that answer.

My husband is gluten intolerant (He's never been officially tested, but following a strict gluten free diet keeps him feeling good). And my mom is a true celiac. LO is only three months right now so we'll see what happens, but coincidentally I came upon this article today which I found quite interesting!

thanks for all of the info ladies! I am currently 30 weeks and have a gluten allergy- discovered almost 2 years ago after 28 years of constant issues!

My doc and I have talked briefly about introduction of gluten, I know it is different then CD, as it is an allergy for me. I am also allergic to tree nuts (hazelnuts in particular) and pineapple. DH is allergic to tree nuts (brazil and hazelnuts). So we will have some interesting food introductions I am sure! I hope to start our baby on gluten, and just watch for any issues. I eat gf, dh eats gluten most of the time.

My biggest concern is like @Pumuckl mentioned- feeding her gluten and me not sharing! That will be hard I am sure! How do you ladies do it? Just not share, and do your kids just accept that as normal?

@Pirouette: if she likes her GF oatmeal you could also start mixing in either wheat flour or regular oatmeal. Actually the latter might be a good thing. That way you just increase the amount of non-GF oatmeal and reduce the amount of GF oatmeal until she eats non-GF only.

@Pumuckl: @hellobeeboston: my ped actually has done some research in the area and said there are a few small studies out there that still point toward waiting till after a year, which is why she was hesitant to sway me one way or another. she said nothing is really conclusive at this point, but the latest studies do recommend early introduction. I have to admit i didn't really "buy" it at first, because it sounded to me like the way you'd treat an allergy, not CD, but after hearing the link with the breastfeeding, it makes a lot more sense.

@Pumuckl: that makes sense - since LO is already eating so many solid foods, it may be hard to get her to take it that way. but maybe we could start with a really small piece of toast each day, or even some cream of wheat (she loves GF oatmeal!)

@hellobeeboston: Yes it might have been her Ped since waiting with the introduction of gluten was the common recommendation a couple of years back. It hasn't been too long that the medical community is changing their stance on it.

At least that was my impression when I read up on A LOT of studies while deciding how to proceed with LO.

@Pirouette: I don't think it can hurt. The one thing they said over and over was to start with minimal amounts and gradually increase. In the really early days he didn't get anything besides BM and about a tablespoon's worth of that BM & flour mix. I made the mix really liquidy (is that even a word?) so it was easy for him to swallow. It was still often a struggle to make him eat it though. In retrospective with him having no issues I'm glad we made him though.

@hellobeeboston: you're the only celiac i actually knew of on this site - i almost just walled you instead of starting a thread but was hoping there would be other input as well, and glad to see we're not alone (not that i wish celiac on others haha). So good to hear he's thriving!

@Pumuckl: do you think 9 months is too late to be considered early introduction? she'd still be getting breastmilk. my ped said some still recommend after a year and other recommend really early like you did, so i was thinking of introducing it around 9-10 months. she's still getting used to digesting solids regularly so i just don't want to add gluten to the mix just yet, but also want the benefits of early introduction!

@Pirouette: Yes there's quite some evidence that introducing gluten early for "high risk children" (as in: they have a parent with CD) is better than waiting to introduce gluten. There was a major increase in CD cases in Sweden in the 90s when the national health commission changed their recommendation to starting gluten later.

@hellobeeboston: We cook GF too. He gets a "normal" toast in the morning and eats at daycare what ever they provide that day. So that's when he really eats gluten. Dinners are GF except for when there is bread etc. involved.

@hellobeeboston: @Pirouette: We are now not testing anymore. The only reason we would test again is if there were reasons to believe that something was amiss. So very much like your Ped says no more testing because he is thriving and has normal poops etc. We only tested while he was under a year old because the poop especially while still BF wouldn't show signs. The second test was at nearly a year old because he had really weird poops for over 2 weeks and he was not feeling well but it turned out to just be a stomach bug.

We'll definitely be sticking with this approach with No'2 too. It's so nice to just be out and about and just feed him foods without having to think twice.

@Pirouette: I have celiac (and so does my sis) DH does not. I was in the same camp as @Pumuckl: we introduced gluten while I was still breastfeeding.... LO is 22 months now and growing and thriving. He eats gluten daily, but since I cook GF he doesn't get as much as normal.

I'd like to get him tested, but our Ped didn't think it was necessary because he is gaining weight, growing, pooping normally, happy. Etc.

@MrsRcCar: at what age did he get the testing done? I had to give up dairy because she couldn't tolerate it but I am hoping she'll outgrow that if she hasn't already. Do they test dairy with blood test too?

@Rocker2014: that makes sense. My mom is asymptomatic and feels the same way, while I suffered for years before being diagnosed...neither is a great result!

@Pumuckl: interesting! I'm going to check out the study - I think my ped mentioned it to me actually... I've definitely heard that breastfeeding while introducing gluten can be really beneficial too. It might play into my timing. Are you going to keep testing him periodically? That's great he's testing negative!

Oh no I had just typed out a really long response and it got eaten :( so here it goes again.

I am celiac that was diagnosed early at 14 months. DH does not have CD.

Here's how we proceeded with our LO - he is not showing any signs of CD now at 16.5m:
We had his cord blood tested at birth to determine whether he has a genetic predisposition for CD. He does so we introduced gluten early. I was really lucky to be able to talk to one of Europe's leading specialists on CD and she recommended this approach. So we introduced gluten after he turned 16 weeks. We started with an espresso spoon of whole wheat flour mixed with BM. We doubled it 4 weeks later and again 4 weeks after that. It was another 4 spoons after another 4 weeks. This continued until he was 9 months old, then he was able to eat as much gluten as he wanted while still eating at least the amount from the month prior. (We had switched to whole grain oatmeal instead of wheat flour at this point). He was otherwise gluten free except for the flour BM mix. It was also strongly encouraged to breastfeed during the time. Here's a little excerpt from the study: http://www.preventceliacdisease.com/project

If you have questions feel free to ask.

ETA: We had his blood tested twice for CD antibodies and it came back negative.

Thanks for all the info, Ladies! It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out for us, I had the blood test when I was about 9 and came up positive genetically, but had no symptoms or inflammatory response at that time so I didn't do gluten free. I became symptomatic after an unrelated serious illness about 3 years ago (age 32), and since I knew what to watch out for I got retested and then started the diet immediately. Because I was very healthy with "latent" or unsymptomatic celiac for so long, I'm hesitant to rely on blood test alone when deciding what to feed baby girl.

We GF here. N was having so many food issues once we moved to more "table" food. We took him for a lot of testing and discovered he had a problem with Dairy and gluten. Not too surprising because I have to be gluten and dairy free as well. My mum is similar. We are hoping that he will out grow his dairy issues, but I am not sold that he will. DH isn't gluten free but he eats about 90% GF because I cook. The only time he gets gluten items is when he works or we go out. The doctors we have spoke with tell us it is possible to out grow the dairy issues but unlikely to out grow the gluten thing.

@Rocker2014: Ha, well i'll tell you what I'm thinking about for the time being if it helps! our thought was to run some celiac bloodwork with her other blood tests at her 1 year appointment. From what i understand, we can just do the gene testing and see if she has the genes, or we can expose her to gluten beforehand and actually test her. but i've also been told you can't really test for celiac before age 3, so it could also be a waste of time to test this early. i figure she's already getting blood drawn, why not at least get the gene test done, but i'm uneasy about introducing gluten and actually testing her. but I don't want to wait until she's 3 to introduce it either! I think we just have to give it to her and see how she does...it just feels so wrong making her eat it if she does have it! but i hate to deprive her for no reason either.

I have celiac and it appears to run in my family (symptom wise) though has not been confirmed. My MIL also has what her dr. calls a "wheat allergy" that may or may not be celiac. She and DH both do much better when GF. My plan is to not expose LO to gluten until they are old enough to tell me, "My tummy hurts!" I spent too many years as a child with "tummy aches" that couldn't be remedied. But once they are old enough, I will, in a controlled way, expose LO to small amounts of gluten and see how it goes. Any GI symptoms and it's off. Any food allergy/intolerance beforehand and it's off.

I just don't want them to feel icky all the time like I did.

I also have celiac, and have heard the same thing - I'm pretty much no help! Since my brother also has celiac I know for a fact it runs in my family. I have no specific plans yet, so I'm hoping someone has a plan they can share so I can learn a little something too!

I have celiac, DH does not. I've spoken to a few peds about this already, and the consensus is there's absolutely no consensus as to when to expose LO to gluten, when to test, etc. I'm starting to put our plan together and was just wondering if anyone else here is going through it or went through it too! would love to hear your story :)
