I had bad swelling in my feet and ankles starting at 5 weeks and had to wear compression socks off an on during my entire pregnancy. I made sure to wear them during any long car rides and when I was sitting for long times at work. I wore the knee highs. With flats on, they look like regular trouser socks.

I've had compression socks since my serious running days and now that I'm nearing the end my doctor suggested I wear them at work since I was feeling super light headed/on my feet all day. Since I started wearing them again my lightheadedness is gone so they work really well for me..also I'm 39 weeks so I'm frankly surprised I'm still on my feet at all haha. But serously, no one cares how you look on a plane so I'd rock them regardless!

Can you just wear pants over the socks? I'm always freezing on a plane and dress in layers. I think there was maybe one time where I felt a little warm on a plane and I just took off my sweater I was wearing.

I actually use these for running and they're awesome. A little colorful, but awesome

I wear compression socks on long flights when I am not pregnant and would suggest it for sure. Test them out before you are on the plane. Just so you know you will be comfortable. with my first i wore compression socks a lot (feb baby) and it was great! LO2 was a Sept baby and there was no way i was wearing compression socks in NYC summer. But i did wear them for flights.

I had really tight ones, I would have to roll them down, kind of like donuts, and then roll them up my legs. It required the help of my husband, though.

I just wore them two weeks ago on a cross country flight and it really wasn't too bad. Other than I kinda felt like my legs got hot, they really didn't bother me. I wore them with leggings and tall boots and felt like they weren't too uncomfortable.

I always wore class II compression stockings (so also covering my thighs) throughout my three pregnancies and I second @PinkElephant: to not wait to put them on. It's easiest if you do it right in the morning and if you can avoid it I'd not do it after you just had a shower. I never minded wearing mine they looked like normal tights.

@Cole: also DON'T wait to put them on until you're in your seat on the plane to try to avoid looking goofy while boarding. :) I attempted that once and went through some ridiculous gymnastics to get them in place. Seriously, though, I liked the feeling of the pressure to relieve some of the achibess/swelling.

@Cole: ahh don't scrunch! That's the hardest way to put them on! This video demonstrates the technique well:

you only need them for the flight right, not the whole trip?? I never wore them for a flight but toward the end of my last pregnancy my feet and legs were so swollen and I had to wear the socks every day for work. The problem with the socks though is that my legs would still swell like crazy right above wherever the sock cut off, so this time if I have trouble with swelling again I think I'll opt for the leggings/stockings instead.

Oh my, this is sounding awful, necessary but awful... I hate tight things! I really appreciate all of the tips though! It doesn't help that I'll be traveling with my two sils who are both super tiny and extremely fashionable, I'm going to feel like an old lady whale on this trip!

There are special donning aids but there is a certain way to put them on, im sure google has pictures. But scrunch them up and pull the heel out so you have them scrunched up to the toes with the heel out. Put in toes then heel while keeping them scrunched. Then pull them up once to mid leg, then one more pull up to knee

ETA I like jobst

I wore the just below the knee ones on a 9 hour flight to Italy at 24 and 26 weeks. They were essential. I did not look good at all...I wore running shoes and a skirt one way and I think capris another way. Even with them my feet still swelled. I also decided I didn't care. Haha. I found them quite hard to put on so I can't imagine how potentially difficult leggings might be unless the compression rating is low. I bought compression pregnancy tights to wear to a wedding in a larger size and I still couldn't get them up my leg. Compression stockings are quite difficult to put on so I'd opt for as short as possible. The instructions for mine (sigavaris brand I think) said there were special gloves for putting them on...

I had these and loved them! They were pretty comfortable, all things considered. I wore them under yoga pants/maxi skirts on flights, and still had my toes free to wear sandals. Size up - they are a Japanese product and run very slim. I am about 5'4" 115 lbs NOT pregnant and wore a medium while pregnant.

Leggings do sound preferable - let me know if you know of some! I wore the stockings on our Europe flights when pregnant with DD1 (26 and 28 weeks) but they only went up to my knee. I will probably wear them on our upcoming flights to Europe at 21/22 weeks, but I'm not looking forward to it... I wore them under a maxi dress last time so nobody really saw them.

I wore them every day throughout my pregnancy. My mom and grandma have terrible varicose veins and I have a very physical job that requires prolonged standing. I preferred toe-less thigh highs. The ones that stop at the knees were super uncomfortable to me.

I think these were the ones I used:

We're flying to Hawaii in a few weeks and I'll be 22 weeks. My doctor wants me to wear compression socks to just above the knee. That sounds terribly uncomfortable not to mention unflattering... Any experience with any compression options? Apparently there are leggings which are sounding like the most appealing option.
