I think of WCM as a replacement for BM and not the other way around so I just continued to BF my MSPI baby.

LO (19 months) is still nursing quite a bit. He has cow's milk every once in a while, but not very often. I'm not trying to wean him, so it never really occurred to me to give him wcm everyday. He does have cheese and/or yogurt most days.

My LO (17 mo) won't drink WCM, so the ped just said to make sure she gets plenty of yogurt and cheese and recommended that we not give her any milk alternatives.

I think there is a misconception that children NEED cow's milk after 12 months of age, primarily for calcium. This can be gained from so many other sources though. You're better off continuing to provide the milk that is designed for humans, rather than milk designed for calves!

My daughter had MSPI and we never did cow's milk or an alternative really. I nursed until 19 months. She just drinks water for the most part, with a very occasional cup of almond milk. MSPI began to resolve itself around 15 months and she began to eat yogurt and cheese, but never WCM. Ped was not concerned.

My daughter has never really had WCM. She breastfed until 28 months, was always a good eater, and doesn't care for milk. So I didn't bother. She gets plenty of protein, fat, and calcium in her diet, so I wasn't concerned. She'll drink those super sugary chocolate milks, but that's it, and those are just way too sugary to be anything but a sometimes treat.

We nursed until 14 months and he had BM in straw cups at meals too. When that ran out, we switched to WCM and I eventually weaned too because I am pregnant and it was hurting.

My 18 month old had MSPI which seemed to resolve around 14 months. We did extended BFing but only for morning and night (I stopped pumping at 12 months) and we gave her hemp milk instead of dairy milk. She was fine with that until we transitioned her off bottles, and then she refused any type of milk. She'll have a few sips of WCM these days but she really just prefers water. We still nurse at night, and she gets cheese (her favorite) and will occasionally eat yogurt. The pediatrician seems to think that's fine.

We nursed until 16 months, and she never really liked milk or milk alternatives. We just skipped it! She drinks plenty of water and gets her nutrients elsewhere.

BF until 18 months, she has just done almond/hemp/coconut milk since I'm lactose intolerant and I didn't want to buy milk just for her. Ped was never concerned.

@bezenha: We breastfed a LOT and still do (LO is 22 months and now at 3-4 times a day). So, I thought of "milk" as a complement and we plan to bf until 2. That being said, it is good to do some kind of "milk" because there is calcium and B12 and D they need after 12 months. We did hemp milk, almond plus (uses pea protein), sometimes soy, sometimes coconut because they have those added vitamins. Is that what you are planning on doing?

My MSPI son did breast milk until 2. We did supplement with neocate splash but that was because he was failure to thrive and needed extra calories. So the splash was on top of solids, bm all night and a few times during the day.

@bezenha: my MSPI daughter did extended breastfeeding, even though she started having some dairy tolerance at 14-15 months. She did not ( and still does not) like cows milk and we just skipped it with her. Now she has it with cereal.

My first had FPIES. We did BM only until 14 mo and then added in some EO28 splash (built up to 1 box per day), but really more for the fact that he wasn't really eating solids. He breast fed until 21 mo (self-weaned) then got frozen BM and 2 boxes of splash a day until 26ish mo and then just the splash. When he was able to tolerate milk at around 30 mo he drank 2%.

My second had similar issues. She was EBF until 11 mo before she could tolerate solids. We just started having WCM at 15 mo, but is still mostly BF. She prefers BM or water.

My 16 month old has never had WCM, and she just stopped nursing within the last couple days. She is perfectly healthy without it, and she eats so much real food now (she is a great eater) that I'm sure she is going to do great without the nursing, too. .

I generally think of BF beyond 1 year as complementary to WCM (or a non dairy alternative), not in place of it. But my MSPI LO is nearing 12 months and I don't mind the idea of extended breastfeeding, so I'm starting to wonder if the easiest thing might be just to continue with BM...but I've never heard of that as an option.

Do people do that? Can BM still be enough after 12 months or am I missing something? Obviously will talk to our ped, but I'm curious to hear the experiences of other families. Thanks!
