In both cases, we rented out the whole apartment and chose rentals with lots of good recommendations. I always recommend airbnb to people. I like that we found a place that will fit 7 of us with beds, a kitchen, and has a local vibe. We made sure to rent from someone who was very active and who's unit had a lot of recent reviews. They do both rentals with them there and when they are out of town. In fact, they nearly always rent whenever they're gone for a trip.
