I was induced due to low fluid at 41+1. Started on cervadil, which sent me into labor, but I didn't dilate. Got the foley cath 12 hours later, which took me to 3 cm. Then they started the pit and I delivered vaginally 24 hours later. It was a huge blow to not be able to natural birth, but I credit that foley cath with getting me a vaginal delivery! I'd opt for it again in a heart beat if I needed it.

I know you're already at the hospital now, but FYI I had a Foley balloon and a similar experience to @MaisyMay--they tried cytotec first, then went w/the Foley b/c of no progress. Getting it in sucked and I got poked a lot until they finally used a speculum to get it in place. I was only 1cm so I think that made it harder and it was a weird sensation to have something pulling down on my cervix, but not too bad. When it popped out a few hrs later I was 3 cm, then they broke my water and started pitocin. (they had tried to break my water earlier but couldn't get to it because I wasn't dilated...) I was planning on an epi the whole time. But if you want natural, I recommend not breaking water and starting pitocin at the same time, yikes. I had a vaginal birth and a 9lb, 5 oz baby, woo hoo!

I went in for my induction at 38 weeks with my twins and they just broke my water. I was only 1 cm dilated at the time, but baby A was born 1 hour later. Being almost 42 weeks I think your chances of having a smooth induction are pretty high! Good luck!!

ETA: I was able to go med free, no pit, epi, or anything else. :)

@hergreenapples: Yeah, unfortunately, I didn't have a choice about the Pit. I was induced due to low amniotic fluid (which was causing slight decels in LO's HR). Although it took over 24 hours for me to show any progression, and well over an hour of pushing,I was still able to deliver vaginally. I was worried toward the end that I would end up with a section (which I almost did!), but I didn't.

@MsLipGloss: Thanks! Ideally I'd like to go without pit, but given how unprepared my body seems to be for labour I'm not sure if that will be possible.

@T-Mom: Yes, different use for the catheter. This will be inserted into my cervix and inflated with saline in order to help my cervix ripen and dilate.

@MaisyMay: Definitely encouraging to hear that you were still able to have a vaginal delivery....this is my biggest concern at the moment.

@prettylizy: Love hearing stories that involve induction without epi! I obviously don't know what the next few days hold for me, but it's always encouraging to know that other women have been down the same (or similar) path and been very successful. Thank you!

My friend had a foley insterted at 41+5 and withing a 12 hours it fell out on it's own and she went into natural labour. Was able to go no med no pit and had a very healthy LO in her arms within 36hours of the foley going in.

Good luck mama!! You'll do great. My birth plan had a few twists and turns but it all ended up okay and I went epi-free even though I ended up on Pit. It's totally doable, and I have to sort of throw it out to the universe at one point and let it all go.

I was started with mysopropil/cytocec at 9 p.m. on a Saturday night when I went in not even 1 cm dilated. After several doses of that, a folley was placed about 2 p.m. on Sunday and I was told that it would fall out when I was about 4 cms. It fell out around 10 p.m. A few hours later I was given a small amount of pitocin and my epidural. LO was born 11:42 Monday morning.

The catheter wasn't uncomfortable. I was still allowed to get up to go to the bathroom but was being monitored for something else so I couldn't walk around much. Let me know what questions you have.

I had a Foley catheter placed with my first delivery, I believe it was only post-partum. I can't even remember why it was in as opposed to a regular catheter. I think it was left in too long. I could not pee and had to stay in the hospital for an extra day so that I could actually pee. I was a wreck, emotionally, over it. I was so worried that I would have to wear a diaper for the rest of my life (obviously my hormones were very high, haha). But I think it was in so long that my muscles forgot how to do it. This time around, I specifically requested no foley catether, and everything was fine.

I think you are in a different situation than me, since it's related to your induction. It's not a bad thing, this was just my experience.

@hergreenapples: I had one . . . I had an unscheduled induction at 38/39 weeks. I didn't post earlier because my induction was long, complicated, and I was given a good amount of Pit to get things going.

BUT, I will wish you the best of luck! :)

ETA: FWIW, Mine was used in combo with Cervadil.

No advice, but I hope that the foley induction goes smoothly and you're able to have the birth experience you want! You'll be meeting your LO so soon--so exciting!

I'm 41+6 today with a baby who is just way too comfy. I've had two NSTs and a BPP and the baby is completely healthy and happy and, evidently, not interested in budging.

I've also had two mini-stretch and sweeps (mini because I wasn't dilated enough for them to be done fully) and done every other "natural" induction method other than castor oil. As of my midwife's home visit yesterday afternoon, I was only 1 cm dilated and 30% effaced.

So, we've elected for an induction, as we aren't comfortable with the risks that come with going past 42 weeks.

At the moment, the tentative plan (waiting for hospital's confirmation) is to have a Foley catheter placed tonight. I'll then be sent home and will go back in the morning to start induction (could be as minimal as rupture of membranes, but will proceed to pitocin if labour doesn't start after that).

As far as induction goes, it seems like the best option for us, as our hope was to have a med-free, intervention-free birth, and at least a Foley will maybe give us the chance to labour without pitocin........

Just wondering if anyone else has had a Foley induction and what your experience was?

Sorry for the long post..I'm struggling emotionally with the change of course.
