when you used canned frosting the piping is not as crisp as it would be when you use homemade. i think you could add a little bit of confectioners sugar to beef it up...

Is there a FAQ's on the Duncan Hine's website about this? I see Betty Crocker has one for the whipped frosting:

Q. Can I pipe Whipped frosting through a pastry tube?
A. It'll work fine in a pastry tube. But use a smaller amount at a time, and pipe as quickly as possible. The warmth from your hands and the squeezing will start to soften the frosting, and it will lose its shape and air. (We do not recommend piping Rich & Creamy frosting through a pastry tube.)

http://www.bettycrocker.com/products/frosting/faq

ETA: Duncan Hines piping with canned frosting tips! http://www.duncanhines.com/baking-tips/frostings/dh/piping-with-canned-frosting Totally poke around the site of whatever brand you are trying to use. Looks like you CAN do it!

I wouldn't feel too bad about trying to pipe the canned stuff. Are we talking lettering, roses, or something else? You may have to adjust the consistency down a little to do lettering or "run" style (where you pipe a fairly solid border and then fill in with more liquidy frosting). I haven't used canned frosting in AGES, but if I remember right it is fairly thick. You could probably do rosettes, flowers, etc. as is, or thin it a little to do lettering.

I agree with @mrs. wagon: that if you want to pipe store bought frosting you should buy the kind with the tip already on it rather than trying to get the frosting from the can into a piping bag.

Question - can you pipe can frosting? Like the Duncan Hines stuff? I don't want to make my own frosting for M's birthday cake but I want to pipe it onto her cake.
