@Crumbs: Ooh, I wonder if we live near each other, ha! :) I looove both peonies and hydrangea - a lot of our neighbors have great peonies, and I'm always jealous of them. I will look into all the others - thank you for the suggestions!

@alie: We're in the same zone! Do you like bushes? Peonies and hydrangeas are really pretty, but they can get big. If you're into wild flowers, lupins, echinacea, delphiniums.

Vines: clematis, honeysuckle.

Shady flowers: bleeding hearts are really nice, but be sure to plant a hosta to cover it up once it dies down. They're really hardy though, so they'll just grow back even bigger the next year.

@Mrs. Superhero: Very pretty!! I bet your mint smells heavenly.

@Crumbs: Hmmm, looks like we are right along the border of 6a/6b. I guess I need to look into what that means! :)

I'm still a novice but from experience have a little better feel for it now. My best advice is look around your neighborhood and see what everyone else is growing - that way you have an idea what kind of things CAN grow where you are. The biggest disappointment is when you fall in love with a picture, then realize it's near impossible to grow where you are.

Go outside and take note of how much sun, wind, and shade each side of your house gets. From there you can narrow down what things can actually thrive in that location (a few things will do alright anywhere, but won't look as great unless it's moved to an ideal spot).

As for the flower bed, try out some annual flowers. You can change them out each year, that way you can play around a bit.

As for the shady spots, I recommend hostas. They're easy and will thrive and divide in the shade.

What hardiness zone are you? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardiness_zone

Hmm, my front garden (the left photo, the right is veggies down the side of my house) is a lot of shade and I did some hostas, a lady's mantle, a pretty fern, a heuchera and some mint (in a sunken bucket, mint wants to take over the world). I mulched around them and made some cement balls by filling old lighting fixtures with cement and breaking the glass off (I found a tutorial on pinterest I think).

It was really pretty and the plants are pretty hardy. You know, water them. I only planted perennials because then you don't have to replant the next year, they just come back up and look pretty again.

@Mrs. Superhero: I will definitely check out your blog!! :)

There is a big, tall tree right in the middle of the lawn, and an empty garden bed in front of the porch that is just craving some boxwoods and flowers or something. Right now it's just mulch (my husband got rid of all the weeds that were there before, but we haven't done anything else).

That side of the house gets the least amount of sun, and once the tree is fully leaf-y, that adds shade as well. It does still get *some* sun throughout the day though.

This is my fourth year gardening, and I sucked big time at first (but to be fair, I was pregnant). I blog about it some on my blog (you can google Honey and Huckleberries). What does it look like now? Any trees? lawn? lots of shade, lots of sun?

I want to do some very basic gardening/landscaping this spring. The front of our house is so sad, and I know it would be better if I just planted something but I have no idea where to start.

I definitely do NOT have a green thumb. Any suggestions for websites or blogs with good advice for beginning gardeners? Or any personal suggestions for easy-to-care-for plants and flowers?

I'm not looking forward to hanging out in the dirt, but I'm willing to do it for happier curb appeal :)
