@MamaG: cost isnt the issue since we arent paying for it, however I prefer packing myself. Whilst packing I'm sorting out things I no longer use and can give away. I'm also packing in a way that makes sense to me and I'll be able to find everything.
Not sure what you mean by the insurance implications? The major breakable items are the televisions which will be packed by the movers

@Mrsbells: make sure you understand the insurance implications of packing yourself. I've had movers pack me three times for cross country moves and learned a lot about how to pack. All in all the packing services aren't that expensive and they are super efficient

@Mrsbells: Well if you are packing yourselves,we used ABF uPack and loooooooved it. Cross country move, efficient, kind customer service, attentive, friendly, cheap. We had to cancel and reschedule last minute. There was no charge or questions asked.
If you're in the DC area, I've heard good things about Two Marines Moving, but that was a few years ago when I was in the area.

@Mrsbells: yes! I thought they were very professional and always super accommodating. I had to switch the day of the move 3 times bc our buyer for our old house kept delaying.

@MrsSRS: yes we are packing ourselves too. I theory I liked th idea of letting movers come in and pack but then I realized I'd rather we do it the way we want it
@winter_wonder: Thanks! I actually have them on my list

@Mrs D: Thanks yes I did take a look at that site before even posting here. I think I found it a bit overwhelming because of how much information there is haha.. But you are right each local affiliate is very different from others within the same company

@Mrsbells: Seriously...check out the link I sent. They go through all the local affiliates of the major van lines. We have moved cross country twice (Boston to Miami and Miami to Detroit). We used large carriers both ways (basically rented a chunk of a semi truck) and had good experiences. You cant just, for example, go with north american van lines bc they are good in one location. You need to research to local affiliates.

@winniebee: I just looked them up on yelp and i think this might be one of the companies that is different from each state because the reviews on there are a bit disheartening

@Mrsbells: We used United Van Lines for both of our cross country moves. The have affiliate companies that work with them, but because they are a national company, there is consistency to the customer service, etc. Zero complaints. We were happy with them. They are more expensive, though.

Thanks guys, yeah I have noticed that with the big national companies there really isnt consistency in the reviews. I guess we just have to hope for the best

I've used Atlas, Bekin and another. They are all "fine" in my opinion. The reviews are going to be mixed and your experience may be okay or not. The thing is they tend to be nationwide companies and the crew that shows up at your house is not guaranteed and will vary. And the loaders and unloaders will be different as they are local, and the driver will remain consistent. But the driver is likely not to be from either of your locations.

I've moved cross country twice, and am in the middle of the another one. I won't review the company I'm using now, since I haven't actually moved yet and we'll see how it turns out :)

In the past two moves, I used Atlas Van Lines and had a great experience. They are a national network, that will coordinate between local movers at both sides. The first time I did a full service move, they pack and move. It was heavenly! Expensive though. If you can afford it or a company is paying your move, I highly recommend. The next time I packed all my things, and they loaded and drove the truck. Both times, everything came when promised, movers were professional and explained the process to me. They had an easy replacement process for the one thing that got lost (a cheap plastic laundry bin not in a box - can't say I blame them). Let me know if you have questions.

Be very wary of picking a moving company though. If it seems to good to be true, it is! There are places that will give you quotes for half the price of the big names, but then they just auction of your shipment to who know who, and there are lots of horror stories from that.

we are looking for long distance movers but the majority of them have terrifyingly awful reviews. I'm wondering if any one has moved across country did you ever have a good experience with a mover?
So far I've only found one decent one and requested a quote but just looking to keep my options open
