I've also read fish oil does wonders for LDL. Also I haven't read everyone's links, but my doc always tells me the *ratio* of HDL:LDL is more important than the total itself or the straight LDL number. My total is always between 280-300 (hereditary, I work out 6 times a week and BMI is around 20) but since my HDL sky-high around 95 they never seem worried (LDL 165). Also. cholesterol is part of a bigger "risk profile" and shouldn't really be looked at in a vacuum, ie the fact that your weight is lower, tris are lower, assume your BP is good, and you don't smoke, overall you're in better shape than you were before, so don't fixate too much on that one number.

I'll look more into oatmeal. Thanks guys!

@Arden: I don't eat almost any red meat... mostly fish and chicken. My triglycerides are way down, phew. I'll look into alternatives for fish and chicken, thanks!

I went to hyvee after I found out that I had a wheat allergy (ended up being a false positive) and meet with a dietitian to helped me plan meals. They have some premade lists of safe foods available online and in store. Here is a link, not sure if it's what you need but I hope it helps.

I think that's pretty normal on a paleo diet, and may not be anything to really worry about. Check out Chris Kresser and Mark Sisson on the issue, but basically if your HDL and triglycerides are good, your LDL number may be inaccurate or suggest a high amount of the benign"fluffy" LDL rather than the smaller, more dense variety that may be dangerous.

Here are some foods that can help lower cholesterol. Oatmeal is #1 on this list for it's soluble fiber content, which lowers cholesterol. It's pretty low on the glycemic index too, if you are worried about blood sugar levels.

DH has struggled with his cholesterol his whole life thanks to genetics, so I know there's a few triggers. Since you've been working on revising your diet, my guess is that the higher numbers are from whole milk dairy products and/or red meats. I know you're cutting out some grains, which is good since most baked goods contribute to higher LDL. Also, my FIL's doctors have him on a stationary bike excercise program; I guess cycling is one of the best exercises you can do for your heart.

Is it possible that the high percentage of meat in your diet (I'm assuming, since you're Paleo) could be affecting it? Maybe you can cut the meat back and try replacing it with another protein source that's better for your cholesterol.

I guess it would all depend on what line of thought you follow in regards to what is health, and what is healthy. I know there are a zillion different diets & health mantras folks are following these days.

Conventional wisdom would be to cut everything out, and exercise, exercise, exercise. and yeah, eat oatmeal.

I would do the opposite :) I think the adrenals are key, and over doing things can trigger negative responses in them.. I would start eating sugar , and pick up my walking/biking/insert low impact exercise here, reduce the amount of time sitting on the computer or attached to devices, don't drink too much water, and focus on some good sleep to start!

I think oatmeal is supposed to help lower cholesterol, if those old Quaker Oats commercials are to be believed.

@mrbee: I haven't had it checked in a while since I was pregnant, and now nursing. My doctor told me there was no point because the levels could be elevated (not sure why), and medication if needed wouldn't be an option at this point. I sure hope so though! High cholesterol is nothing to mess with.

@Bao: Thanks! I will start doing all that, except I can't eat oatmeal even if it does have fiber b/c it will raise my blood sugars (I'm really sensitive to carbs).

Is your LDL responding to your efforts?

@mrbee: I have a history of high cholesterol (hereditary, as I am barely 120lbs) and some things I do are take a fish oil pill daily, eat oatmeal and limit red meats and cheeses. Also, exercise as you mentioned.

I have no medical info to back this up but I recently watched a documentary on Netflix called Fat Head that had some really interesting information about how to reduce cholesterol but not cutting saturated fats. It's a response to Morgan Spurlocks Supersize Me, which he essentially debunked.

I had my annual physical recently, and got my stats back.

* The good news: I lost 15 pounds, my triglycerides went down from "high" to "normal," and my "good cholesterol" went up 6 mg/dL. My fasting blood sugar also went from "impaired/pre-diabests" to "normal."
* The bad news: my bad cholesterol went up by 31 mg/dL and went from "borderline high" to "high."

I'm going to increase my exercise and decrease my consumption of fats and cheese. I'll also look to increase consumption of fiber (while avoiding sugar and wheat).

Any other ideas on how to lower my LDL cholesterol levels? I'll be going back to see the doctor again in a few months, and would like to see a big difference in that stat.
