was just at a baby naming yesterday- the parents got up, spoke about the people who the baby was named for, and then said what her hebrew name would be, what it meant, who it was in honor of. then they said a few prayers, and there was a brunch.

@Pink Champagne: @pregnantbee: @ElbieKay: The problem is we aren't affiliated with any synagogue and don't really know of any Rabbi's that will do something like that for an interfaith couple. I am actually Baptist, DH is Jewish. We want something low key and simple yet still meaningful and he is clueless. It took us over a year to find a Rabbi willing to officiate at our interfaith wedding and he wont do the ceremony. So, we are left to our own devices.

No DD here, but lots of DH cousins with DDs. :) I've never been to a baby naming that wasn't attended by a rabbi. I suppose you could do it yourself and "wing it", but IMO, we had a Bris for DS (and I assume you would probably have one if you had a DS) so why wouldn't you want to make the experience for your DD just as special and meaningful and follow the proper protocol (naming the baby is a big part of the Bris for those who might be reading this and not know, it's not just about the circumcision)? Even if you're not super religious, (and I know baby makings for girls can get sort of pushed to the wayside) I think it's an important custom to keep up with and do right.

We have friends who did their own ceremony. They got a book called something like "Welcoming your Jewish Daughter" and put a simple party together based on that.

@Mrs Hedgehog: Jewish with DS. The rabbi/moyel we hired also would have done a girl naming ceremony if he turned out to be a girl. Not sure how you'd have an official naming ceremony without hiring someone?

I'm not planning on having a naming ceremony, but if I did I would probably hire a rabbi or cantor. So, not sure what to tell you.

What did you do for the naming ceremony of you had one? We don't plan on hiring a rabbi or cantor or anything and are clueless as to where to even begin.
