My son was walking during a visit to my parent's home for 3 weeks. Before then, he would pull himself up and just stand there. Our ped said most kids walk at a year or later. Although I seem to know a lot of people with kids walking before their first birthday too. DS isn't really close yet. He can't balance on his own yet, but he can walk along furniture and pick things up off the floor if he has a hand to balance him.
