So many school librarians - cool! Sadly, my principal decided to do away with a librarian this year. We have a decent space and not a bad collection, but it isn't maintained. As a former librarian, it breaks my heart that my school's library is in such disarray.

@anagram: I like how you mentioned the importance of building a collection for everyone, not just the librarian. I also learned a new word from your post: "readicide"! There is so many examples of readicide in schools these days, librarians are possibly our last hope!

School librarian here. I liked grad school... It wasn't very challenging on an academic level (for me) but I feel like it gave me a good philosophical basis for being the type of librarian I am.

There are large parts of my actual job that a trained monkey could do, so in that respect my school district could save money by hiring an hourly worker like a library aide instead of me--- except for the knowledge I gained in Grad school about what motivates kids to read, which factors dissuade them from reading, how to build a collection for everyone (not just a collection the librarian him/herself would enjoy), how to create interesting library programming-- that's where it comes in handy to have an MLS.

These are things my library assistants have never learned about and the ones I've had tend to run the library the way libraries were run 50 years ago-- keeping a quiet environment, revering classics and not being in touch with current popular hits, forcing kids to read "on their level" and other typical readicide moves.

Anyway-- I love what I do. Best job ever.

@Katrocap: @swedishfish: @debbiei8: lol yeah, I hate school. It's kind of sad, I put about an hour or two a week of work in and have a 4.0. Not a brag, it's really just that pathetic! But, work is paying for it and I need the darn degree!

I guess I was the only one who liked school, lol. The director of my program was awesome and taught some of my favorite classes. Some of the others were incredibly boring, though!

@debbiei8: @Katrocap: I hated school as well. I worked in a public library since high school so it felt it was kind of useless. I also got my teaching certification for social studies as an undergrad so I had student teaching and subbing experience which was a lot more than most other grad students had.

@Katrocap @Bookish: I hated library school too. Maybe it's because I worked in a library throughout my undergrad and graduate schooling (one academic, one public) but it drove me crazy!

I work in an hourly children's and circulation position at a public library. I do have my MLS (focus in children's services) but I've chosen to work part-time at this position (I also work part-time as a nanny) so we don't have to pay for childcare. We will also be moving soon since my husband is a Ph. D student and will finish soon so a full-time job didn't make a lot of sense after getting my MLS. After my maternity leave I will go back for night and weekend shifts only at the library.

@mrstal: I wasn't officially a librarian myself, even though that was my role. DH does have a MLS, though.

@bookish: Congrats on being half way done! DH was loves his job but did not love library school.
