@brownsquirrel: I am 9.5 weeks pregnant with my first and am compound heterozygous. I am on a prenatal with quatrefolic acid (supposed to be easier to absorb), a supplement with extra folic and B vitamins, and was on baby aspirin until my doc found a hematoma in my uterus. :/

@Mrs. Jacks: Thanks for the answer, short and sweet was what I was looking for at this point :) When I do finally need a pedi, I might just ask you for rec's, if you still know people around here!

@Mrs.Someone: it's a complicated answer, with some of the issues being the genetic predisposition to neural tube defects due to chronically low levels of folate pre pregnancy and during pregnancy (obviously less of a concern when the pregnant woman is appropriately supplemented) and the effects of certain treatments a pregnant woman may have been on such as medications for clotting, which require us to monitor the baby closely for bleeding issues.

So there are a host of issues, but in generally the well-supervised mother baby dyad is just fine as long as the practitioners are aware.

I know this answer is pretty simplistic in the interest of time, but it's a good one to bring up when you are interviewing pediatricians (when you get to that point!)

@Mrs. Jacks: I just happened to see a link to this old thread. I have been wondering what MTHFR means for a newborn and child. What do you do to treat them?

I'm not, but I've taken care of plenty of babies from moms who were homozygous for it. In slightly related fashion, I wonder if anyone else reads the mutation as I do (cuss word!)

So, I'm pregnant again, for the 4th time in the last 12 months. But, this is the first pregnancy since we learned I have 2 MTHFR mutations. We weren't exactly TTC, so we were a little shocked to get a positive HPT. But, we are really excited now. I'm taking my prenatal, an additional 4200 mcg of Folic Acid, and 2 baby aspirin every day. I was just wondering if there were any other MTHFR moms out there?
