@Mae: a walk or a car ride? At that age, I was taking out the stroller for 80% of the naps. I was convinced I was going to be walking her around until she was a toddler. I worried for no reason. Now I miss the exercise :)

The great thing about these kinds of posts is that you gets tons of different tips to try. Unfortunately, what works for one baby won't for another. Or what works for your baby one week won't the next. I think the only thing you can really do is just keep trying different things until you find something that works for you. It will happen! And worst case most babies consolidate their naps around 5-6 months, and at least your entire day stops being about the nap. Best of luck to you!

@anandam: won't sleep on me! When I was still able to nurse her she would sometimes fall asleep nursing but inevitably it only lasted 5 or 10 minutes. She runs hot so when she is snuggled up laying on us she sweats and that annoys her and wakes her up. I love putting her in the moby and sometimes she'll fall asleep that way but that only gets about 20 min before she wakes up hot and annoyed haha

@Zbug: I can't, unfortunately :(

@sandy: hm. maybe i'll try that. I hate to leave her awake for too long in her crib though-- i miss her! haha. I hate days where she is fighting naps and I feel like I spend my whole day feeding her or trying to get her to sleep. When she's full and rested and happy she's so much fun and I can play with her and I'm always trying to maximize her awake/happy time! But I guess if putting her down earlier kept her happier that would be worth it!

@Mae: my only thought is try putting her down earlier. Maybe try an hour from when she wakes up and see how she does. Even if it takes her 10-15 minutes to fall asleep it may lead to a longer overall nap. It's frustrating bc by the time they wake up and feed they're only up for another 30 minutes before they go down. At that age my LO's awake time was so short. Or if she wakes early from a nap maybe leave her for a bit longer and see if she falls back asleep - sometimes if she woke up after half an hour I would leave her for at least another half hour and 90% of the time she would fall asleep and sleep for another hour or two

Pretty typical, unfortunately. Do you bf? I could often nurse mine back down. Even now at 9 mo, nursing her back down is often the only thing that gets her back down after a short nap. I always had to do it immediately though. If she was awake for more than a few minutes, I just had to let it ride and try again in an hour or two (or however long her awake time was at the time).

This is probably no help at all, but my guy is still only really napping when worn or held. He might get 15-30min in the crib, but 1-2hrs in my arms. Or did you say she won't sleep on you?

@Weagle: i d be happy to let her of whatever she wanted if it made her happy! But she's such a crank when she only sleeps 30 min, it seems worth trying to fix if possible. :)

@catomd00: Ditto

I know hindsight is 20/20 and all of that jazz, but I really wish I hadn't stressed so much about naps that early. I tend to be very relaxed while everyone around me is quite Type A and very scheduled. Even the most scheduled of my friends that were going through the newborn days with me have come back and said they wish they had paid attention to their baby more than the schedule. They made themselves miserable.

Another thing, we started belly naps at 10 weeks, and it pretty much changed our life. (Until a few weeks later :wink: )

@Mae: I think mine still have tiny tummies because they wake up wailing for food, chewing on their hands, etc. Our estimate of how much they get is 2.5-3 oz though, so they probably do get hungry sooner. More than that usually results in a flood of spit up though. I'm hoping we can stretch feedings out sooner rather than later.

The night away was alright. The wedding was so exhausting that I still feel tired today. But the grandparents survived at home so that's good!

Wish I could help, but I kind of think it is just something babies at that age do! My daughter is 11 weeks old and rarely takes a nap longer than 46-47 minutes (lol, that's how predictable it is). We also try to stick to easy routine and it sucks when it all gets thrown off! It sounds like she is getting more than enough nighttime sleep (lucky you! I kind of hate you, DD will only sleep 8 hours overnight if we'd are lucky with mostly 2 wake ups, yawn.....), so I don't think her short naps are due to over tiredness. But, I would definitely put her to sleep swaddled, white noise, etc.for naps because I have found that does increase the chances of a longer nap. So, basically not much to offer, but just wanted to say I am right there with you! Boo.

I think her sleep sounds great!

I can't get C to nap in his crib daytime for the life of me. Swing only, and that's when he does nap! The overnights you're getting sounds dreamy, I have so much envy!

I try to keep in mind how young they are and anything still goes for sleep at this age in my books. The consistency and location will come (I am aiming for 4m or so) and for now to just go with the flow, which is really hard on the tough days, but will hopefully improve/get more ideal/okay feeling with time.

Crap naps are pretty typical. 1 hour is considered a "long" nap, so if you're getting that once a day, I'd say you're pretty lucky! I wouldn't be too concerned about scheduling her this young, just respond to her cues. It'll change every few weeks anyways!

@twodoghouse: I hate feeding her in less than 3 hr increments because she rarely seems hungry before then, and if I do offer her food before then she only eats 1-2 ounces instead of her usual 4 and then I feel like she wakes up BECAUSE she's hungry from the next nap and we get in this weird short cycle where she is cranky and snacking all day instead of eating meals. :/ (this is actually why I started EASY because she was trying to snack all day and it was making her whiny and sort of cranky all day!) Babies man. :) Also, how was your night away?! did you sleep?!

This is pretty typical of my babies, unless they are having a REALLY good nap day (maybe once per week) and they sleep longer. We do EASY and they are pretty used to eating right when they wake up from a nap which is why they pretty much eat every 1.75-2 hours. That's the only way that we manage to restart the cycle. However sometimes they skip the activity portion if they take a short (15-20 min) nap and go straight from eating to sleep again.

So my (almost) 10 week old is an awesome night sleeper (11-12 hour stretch with 1 wakeup consistently), but we've struggled with naps. I've been trying to do a 3 hour EASY with her for the past 5 weeks, with varying levels of success.

In the last 2 weeks she's started showing sleepy cues, which is super helpful (big yawn then rubs her eyes). I've noticed that if I put her down to nap in her swing she'll generally fall asleep but almost never stays asleep more than 30 minutes, then wakes up sort of cranky. If I put her down for a nap with her bedtime routine (swaddle sack, white noise, binky, down in her bassinet in our room) she usually goes down super fast (5-10 min after I set her down sleepy but awake, and rarely fusses for more than 1-2 min) and about 50% of the time she'll sleep 1-2 hours then wake up super happy and smiley.

But the other 50% of the time she wakes up after 30-40 minutes. I usually wait about 5-10 min after she wakes up to pick her up (unless she starts really crying) to see if she'll fall back asleep on her own, I've never had any success trying to put her back to sleep by rocking or anything like that. I wouldn't care if she just didn't need that much sleep and woke up happy-- I'm not really trying to just get more free time here. The problem is that if she wakes up after less than an hour she is super cranky. Once she does this we're usually in for a rough few hours or rest of the day-- because she gets overtired and cranky and usually the rest of the naps for the day are also short and fitful followed by cranky pants.

I generally try to put her down 1.5 hours after she last woke up, unless she looks tired earlier (sometimes she yawns 15 min earlier) and then I'll put her down right away then. But when she has a really short nap it gets our schedule all off because if she isn't ready to eat when she wakes up (because it is only 2 hours from when she last ate) then by the time she eats again she's tired right away and then we'd have our schedule flipped.

So is this just normal 9-10 week old stuff? Or is there anything I can do to help her sleep longer? I just want a well rested baby because she's SO much happier when she's slept enough!
