My biggest questions are about integrating foster kids into your biological family unit. We are planning to foster in the future, but wanted to wait until our biological children were older. I'd love to read about how to prepare/talk to kids about fostering, and how to help them manage all the difficulties that it can bring (kids returning to their families, behavioral difficulties, etc.). Also, from her perspective, what would be an ideal age to wait for bio kids to hit before thinking about fostering?<br /> I'm aware that often its older children who need foster homes, but I'm not sure that would be best for our family. We would be looking more at fostering toddler/pre-school aged children for a few reasons. Fostering does open doors to adoption, but there are more direct paths, so I'm wondering what the benefits are (especially with the drawbacks of potentially returning the child to his/her parents). I actually only know a few families who have fostered, and all of them either adopted children in the system who were legally free for adoption (and therefore didn't have to be fostered first) or they stopped fostering after only a few years because the emotional work was too much. Any man, woman, single or married can get certified as long as they are over 18. You have to take classes, pass a background check, take a TB test, and they need to come look at your home. As long as you pass the background check then you will be in the clear! </p> <p>No you do not need to have a spotless home. The foster family that I worked for had 7 kids, 3 huge dogs, and a bunch of other animals....the house was never even close to spotless ; ) No you do not need to have a ton of money either. You just can't live on the foster care stipends.
