@nycalimama: How great to be able to have such a flexible career. I always wanted to go into the nursing field (for many reasons) and now I wish I could go back in time and do something like that. Unfortunately I don't have the time nor the money to go back to school. :(

Thanks everyone. I guess I'm just being a little selfish because I don't want to work full-time but I don't want to sacrifice my lifestyle (at least not too much!). I guess you can't have it all. sigh. If only I could win the lotto!

I'm a nurse. I love it but am home for now. When I return to work I plan to go part-time (2-3 days a week). Maybe even just per diem at first. I do think the ability to have a flexible schedule is one of the best perks of my field.

I was a full-time WOHM after #1 and while we adjusted to that kind of life pretty well, I was always wishing for more family time. I always thought that part-time work is a great way to try to balance family/work life.

@banana: the lifestyle change and budgeting have been challenging but like anything it will get easier with time. At least that's what I tell myself when I go over budget. :)

@banana: I'm not sure since we plan on having more kiddos. I'll try to find stuff where I can work from home at least some. We're moving soon too so it really depends on what opportunities I find but I won't take a job that requires regular 70+ hour workweeks anymore.

@umlo: Thanks for the info! Glad it wasn't a decision you regretted. I'm so used to living a certain lifestyle and thinking about the sacrifices I would have to make is nerve-wrecking! I'm still debating what I should do, but it's nice to hear from others who have had to make the same decision.

@banana yes, it was a significant paycut since I went from salary to contract. Fortunately, my husband has a pretty stable job and we were comfortable becoming a one-income family, with my job bringing supplemental income to cover some necessities and majority of the baby needs. Initially when I started, i reached out to my contacts asking what they were working on and if they needed any consulting work to give me a call. I had a few folks respond and secured a few projects that way. And when things were slowing down and it was difficult to get anything, I'd volunteer doing various marketing related things while trying to secure more work. NPOs are always in need especially local affiliates. It was a huge change for me since asking for work was something I was not used to but it was a decision I do not regret. Hope this helps!

@umlo: Was securing consulting work difficult? I'd love to do consulting but I wouldn't even know how to begin. Did you have to endure a severe pay cut as a result of going from full to part time work?

PT WAHM here. I used to work full time in the city as a marketing manager but after baby, I decided I wanted to be home and work, so I secured some consulting work that I could do from home, including some volunteering of the same kind of work, so I can be somewhat relevant when I go back full time.

@banana: I do feel fortunate - but it has been a loooong road for him in school/residency so hopefully it will pay off! I think even if his salary was going to stay the same, I would work part time while my kids are young. Such a tough spot to be in though!

I wanted to go part time, but in the end, I couldn't make it work with my employer and our day care options.

For me, I'd still have had a decent pay out after day care costs and the reduction in my salary. I cut out a lot of material stuff while I was working so we could save for our house down payment, so I am used to living the "austere" life.

@winniebee: Ah. I see. What a great situation you're in. I wish my husband's salary would increase drastically to make up for my part-time work salary. sigh. But unfortunately that probably won't be the case. I'll just have to go back to the drawing board and figure out this whole part time/full time working thing.

@Maysprout: How long do you plan on working part time?

@banana: I think I will continue working part-time indefinitely! We plan to have more children after this. The pay cut will make it so that we do have to sacrifice in the short term because I currently make double my husband's salary (he's a resident now). However, in 2 years, his salary will increase drastically so hopefully it won't be an issue then.

I teach and tutor right now. It's a bit different than what I used to do but I needed the teaching experience so it's a good time to do it. I can arrange my lectures from home then just go to teach or tutor about 1-2x a week. It's a big pay cut because I don't work that much but I don't plan to do it forever and I just emotionally couldn't work as much as I was and be away from baby in a job that I didn't love and be a happy person so for me it was worth it.

@winniebee: Do you think you will continue working part-time for a while (few years?) Also, will your paycut make you have to sacrifice a lot of material things in your life? These are all questions I have to deal with and am doubting what I should do. =\

I'm currently pregnant, but plan to return to work 4 days rather than 5 days. I'll get paid 75% pay and will have to bill 75% of the full time hours. I'm an attorney (litigator) and work in a family friendly law firm. All of the women who have had children have returned 4 days a week. The pay cut is going to suck, but I want an extra day at home and can't deal with the stress of full billable hours requirements. Currently, I work from about 8-6 or 6:30 and when I go 4 days I plan to work 8:30-5.

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about going from full-time work to part-time work. I really want to spend more time with my LO and family and am starting to realize that full-time work just isn't for me.

Unfortunately my career doesn't really allow for part-time work schedules. I was just curious to see if there are any part-time working moms on HB and wondering what line of work you are in?
