I'm not the best biker, so i was too afraid of falling off my bike. I'll pick it back up again after I deliver.

I stopped at almost 8 months because my stomach was really starting to poke into the kangaroo seat. I actually still rode with LO with no issues. I will admit, I usually rode when I was with DH so that he could get on and off the bike when crossing the street. We stuck to bike lanes and quieter roads.

I think everyone is different and I definitely didn't have balance issues!

I commute by bike much of the year and rode for a few months of my pregnancy, maybe until 4 or 5 months? At that point it was winter plus I started to worry about safety if I did get in a crash, because I ride on city streets, so I stopped.

I wouldn't risk it. I've fallen off my bike before. Just not worth the risk of injury from a fall or car vs bike accident to me.

Thanks! I have a friend who went into labor, and she rode with her husband to the birth center, stopping every few blocks for contractions. Which is so crazy cool. I plan to ride as long as it feels comfortable and safe. These days I have way less range with my trailer, so most of my riding is on quiet neighborhood streets. I might feel less safe on a busy commuting route.

@sarac: I didn't vote because I don't have a decent bike right now  but I wanted to tell you that you rock. Also, my mom rode her bike the day she went into labor with my brother.

I can see why you might consider stopping once you get further along and your balance is affected.

I bike commute but during my previous pregnancy my OB suggested I stop at 16 weeks because of safety... she pointed out that even though your balance is not necessarily worse, it is more dangerous if you fall. I am not one to stop doing something just because everyone else does it... but that concerned me a little bit. My former OB had told me 20 weeks. With my last one, I stopped spinning at 35 weeks because my belly was in the way when my knees came up. I'm sure with a little adjustment that could easily be avoided but this time around I'm pretty sure I will only ride through 16 weeks.

A woman on my cycling team rode her road bike until she started feeling uncomfortable. I think she said it was bothering her hips? I think she rode til around 16-20 weeks.

I spin (indoor cycle) at least 2 x a week and we are going crazy up on that bike! All I get is "yeah, that's so good when you're pregnant!". Yes, there are the balance concerns, but I think it's great!

@sarac: I stopped really for the danger factor. I was still completely comfortable on my bike. I think I even did a few quick bike trips in the neighborhood around 6.5 months and was still feeling good.

@jedeve: I think the only reason I fit is that I have super long legs so I can even scoot back a little more. It's the only cardio that's comfortable for me; everything else puts a ton of pressure on my sciatic. I hopped on a regular upright and it was the worst thing ever. I wanted to bump the old men off the bikes ;)

I must have in the first tri with my first kid hit I don't really remember. After that, NO WAY!
The baby caused sooook much pelvic and hip pain that it would have been absolutely miserable.

Every pregnancy is different obviously. If your baby is situated in a way that is comfortable for your body, then keep riding! But for people who had pregnancies like mine I can understand why they would look at you like you are nuts!

I rode mine up to 36 weeks and delivered at 39. I had no balance issues, just rode slower towards the end. Oh, and I was also pulling LO #1 in the bike trailer! I got a lot of looks, some confused but mostly good. A few people would stop and applaud, lol. I say if you're comfortable, go for it!

I did for fun until I was 7/8 months - I had a winter baby so my bike riding in Boston ends in October.

After the delivery, it took a good year. Episiotomy, scar tissue, nerve damage. I never thought I'd ride ever again! But I'm back!

i rode in my last pregnancy. I had a very padded seat cushion, otherwise it bothered me. Nobody said anything to me! Now i just ride the recumbent bike at the gym. Hell, nobody's said shit to me except some women who have praised me, heh.

At 7 months now, when i pull my feet up, it squishes my belly uncomfortably. My current Trek bike wouldn't be comfortable anymore....

@Mamaof2: Not for everyone, I think. I've solved it so far by changing to a different bike, and lowering my seat. Like that, I'm perfectly stable, where I might not be on my commuter bike.

Live in Philadelphia and bike commute each day. My bike ride is 8 mins where as it would be 30 mins bus or walking. I'm a pastry chef and Rly don't feel like waking up any earlier than I already do so I'm hoping to bike the whole pregnancy. Not sure how being huge and sweaty in the dead of summer will affect that but I guess I'll find out!

I live in bike heaven (Portland), and generally try to ride my bike instead of driving as much as possible. I did it a bit during the first trimester, but at about 14 weeks I was able to go back to it fairly frequently. I feel so great!

Now, though, I'm getting the odd old person giving me a nasty look, and several random questions about 'When are you going to stop that already???' When I tell them that I'm not planning to they look at me like I'm crazy. Has anyone else here ridden through out pregnancy? It's pretty common in my circle and here in town, so I've been surprised at the number of comments I've gotten.
