Do you know how the job market is? My best friend completed his school counseling degree a few years ago and at the time the market was completely saturated. He works as a college admissions counselor, which seems to have more opportunities.

@Silva: ah gotcha... I think I would need to complete a program before taking the praxis? but I'm not sure...I'm going to attend an info session next week!

well, i'm a psychologist but i work with kids and adolescents, families, parents, individuals and so on...So I'll answer re working with kids/ados?

What do you like/dislike about it? Umm I love seeing positive change, being able to be someone in their lives who takes them seriously and who they feel supports them, i LOVE getting to know them and learning about them..I find their minds so interesting and it's always about learning something new which is great..

That said, it can be frustrating working with parents (b/c you inevitably have to deal with the parents) who dont understand the process/just want you to 'fix' their kid/aren't invested in the process..and hard to work with kids with difficult home situations cos you can sometimes feel like they're working so hard but just going back into a toxic environment which is hard. And it always being challenging makes it difficult at times because it can be hard to feel competent. Also, dealing with emotional stuff all day is pretty draining!

I'm not sure what being a school counsellor over there is like though so maybe this isnt helpful? think it's a great career to have and can be really rewarding but it's also super difficult and stressful - maybe like any job  sorry for the novel!

@hilsy85: I talked to a friend of mine who is a high school counselor, and she did say that at least in our state you have to take the Praxis for most positions. I guess that would be my next step?
I'd be looking more at the high school level (although ideally college, but those positions are hard to come by!).

@Silva: same! I have a degree in mental health counseling and have worked with adults...but I always wanted to work with kids, and it seems like a school counselor would be a good match.

I have been thinking about moving in this direction. I have a degree in social work, but have always worked with adults. It would be nice to get a job where I can have summers off with my kids!

@edelweiss: ha thanks! I'm still in the early stages of thinking about it, but am checking out some programs and getting excited...but we shall see! It would be a slow process for sure.

Tell me about your job! What do you like/dislike about it? What setting do you work in? What was your program like?

I'm contemplating a career switch...
