@DesertDreams88: I had success limiting dairy with my son. I ate bread full stop, limited cheese & things with baked milk, but cut out ice cream, yogurt, and straight milk. His green, mucusy bms went away. I started milk again around 8 months, but went back off it until 12 months. He was fine and we started WCM at 15ish months.
Currently I'm limiting even more for my daughter, because her mucusey bms aren't going away (at 8 weeks). I'd suggest you reduce and wait for a few weeks to see if the mucus resolves.

@DesertDreams88: based on all that, it really doesn't sound like there is an issue. Newborns are notoriously congested because their nasal passages are so tiny, they get clogged easily. Give it a few more weeks and see how he is doing. If the mucous increases AND you notice other symptoms, then maybe there is something else there.

I admittedly don't know anything about MSPI but I'm allergic to milk and love bread (so i wanted to give you hope that its not all bad!) My body responds to goat milk differently than cows. I don't know if switching your own diet to goat/sheep dairy would help you in the long run if you do need an elimination diet. Trader Joe's had some great cheese I can eat.

For bread, bagels usually don't have milk, chiabatta, trader Joes English muffins and some of their bread. You can cook with coconut milk with pretty good results.

I think his fussiness, gas/burp, and spit-up are all normal levels. He's fussy when he's hungry or overtired, but nursing him or getting him down for a nap totally solves the issue. He only burps once or twice per feeding. He is a "happy spitter" according to Kellymom's description.

He has some congestion, but severe congestion, allergies, asthma, and eczema run in DH's family, especially with DH. If DH had been born in 2016, he would have been the quintessential picture of MSPI. But back in the 1980s in Wisconsin, cutting out dairy was just not even talked about. It makes me wonder sadly how many babies had and have intolerances that just go unnoticed.

I agree with others that if mucus is the only sign, that could very well be an illness and not MSPI. Usually other symptoms accompany are involved when it is MSPI, like blood in stool, discomfort, rash/eczema, etc. I wouldn't eliminate anything just yet based on mucusy diapers alone. Now, if your LO starts acting uncomfortable, is having really green diapers along with mucus, and you see any blood, then I would be more inclined to think it was MSPI.

@DesertDreams88: There are a lot of gluten free breads out there, you might want to try them. Is the texture of other foods something that bothers you? Can you mix them into a dairy-free smoothie? I've heard good things about rice milk and hemp milk as dairy and nut free milk alternatives.

Hemp milk, coconut milk? Goat or sheets milke cheeses? Not sure if it's the lactose or casein for the allergy, but I am mildly lactose intolerant so I reduce it as much as possible and these are the things I do to still have my milk and cheese. Hoping it's just a little cold.

@hilsy85: I took his temp because the mucousy diapers were something new and I just wasn't sure if something was developing.

@catlady: yeah unfortunately DH is allergic to all tree nuts.

@Baby Boy Mom: thank you for the suggestion, but like I said, I only eat breads and dairy, so going gluten-free isn't really an option either.

@Golden: thanks for the note about ciabatta, I did not know that! I'm compiling a list of dairy free options that I like. I can't go 100% dairy free for months but I can try it out for several days, and/or reduce for several months.

@hilsy85: @skipra: @ShootingStar: the color was similar to mostly yellow, but may be a little greenish. Hard to describe. There was definitely one that was greenish, but that was an anomaly.

Now I'm in the very weird position of hoping it was a minor (!!!) cold or virus. Could it also possibly be allergies, this young?? Everything is blooming right now (AZ) and both my husband I have seasonal allergies that have been acting up ( just a runny nose.) My husband is severely allergic to pretty much anything nature creates.

@catlady: Totally agree, I eliminated SO MANY THINGS. No bread for 8 months! And she was never even really unhappy just mucous and a tiny amount of blood. And now she's fine with everything except dairy and some citrus and it's hard to tell if she outgrew stuff or it was never a problem in the first place (gluten I am fairly certain was never an issue in retrospect). I would definitely do things differently if I could again.

I posted before to try out eliminating dairy for a short period of time but now I agree with @skipra: @hilsy85: @ShootingStar: that you should at least wait a few days first because it's likely not MSPI.

@catlady: @ShootingStar: I agree. Based JUST on mucousy diapers, I would definitely not jump to MSPI. Excess drool or a cold can cause it as well. Not to mention, sometimes mucous is just mucous--my DD has it sometimes too. If he is eating well, not in discomfort, and the color is ok, then I would try not to jump to any conclusions!

ETA also what made you take his temp? 99s are still within the normal range for a newborn, not a fever.

I did not have luck reducing, only eliminating. From what you said about the fever, I would suspect a cold as well and not MSPI. Hope that is the case for you. I don't know why everyone is so quick to jump on the food elimination train these days. Two days of mucousy diapers should not make you need to drop dairy completely. I know I'm not a doctor, but I regret dropping so many foods so quickly. I'm pretty sure I eliminated a ton of stuff that my LO wasn't even reacting to, and our pediatrician wouldn't let me add them back in until LO turned 1.

Just FYI, peanuts are not treenuts (like almonds). I would only drop the nuts that your DH is actually allergic to, especially if you have such a limited diet already.

With the fever and only 2 days of mucus I would maybe wait and see to change anything. How was the color? With one of my MSPI babies, the poop turned very green too.
I had to eliminate everything dairy and soy which sucked for me being a vegetarian so I know how challenging it is to limit an already limited diet! One of my frI ends was able to just eliminate the obvious dairy.
If you do need to cut it out completely, you can try hemp milk which is better than nut milks anyway, and they are making more items, like yogurt and "ice cream" with coconut milk.
And worst case you have formula options. You shouldn't have to kill yourself to breastfeed!

If he had only 2 days of mucousy diapers and no other symptoms I would honestly ignore it. When DS was a baby he had this sometimes too. But he had no other symptoms (no green poop, no fussiness related to eating, no blood, etc.). I think it was just due to teething or colds or excessive drool (he was very drooly). He most definitely was not MSPI.

Not really. I had to completely eliminate dairy until around six months. If I had just one piece of pizza or whatever, the mucus poops would return. After six months, I was able to have a little without it affecting her. By 9-10 months, I was eating as much as I wanting without problems. I'm sorry! It completely sucks.

My LO developed a milk allergy when he was 3 months old. He even had blood in his stool sometimes. I was told to give up soy and dairy. Other than the tiny speck of blood and mucousy stool he was fine. If he had any discomfort I wouldn't know as he was very happy and active. So I gave up dairy and soy for two months, and it created a lot of stress because almost everything has soy or dairy. It was awful. Then, I started having health issues that I think may have been due to the stress of having to follow such a strict diet. Or perhaps it was due to the lack of some of the nutrients dairy and soy provided. I don't know. After the two months of the MSPI diet, when I took my LO to his check up he had not put on any weight. So I don't know if my MSPI diet decrease the amount of fat in my milk. But after that appointment, I decided to go back to my regular diet. I chose not to eliminate any soy, but I did limit my dairy intake. I drank almond milk instead of milk. I ate cheese and ice cream once in awhile. I didn't eat meals that were made with a lot of dairy. Stayed away from yogurt, sour cream, and milk. By the next appointment my LO had put on weight. And he started to have less and less mucousy stools. He is now 18 months and I believe he has grown out of his allergy. So for us reducing my dairy intake did help.

@DesertDreams88: I hope this is not out of line, but I would do some googling re: gluten free casein free diet. One of the "symptoms" of sensitivity is actually self limiting to only those two. If it's relevant then essentially by eliminating them you can add everything else back in. (One of my LOs is GFCF...) As to your actual question yes I had to eliminate ALL dairy.

@DesertDreams88: I eliminated major dairy from my diet with dd1 and it was a game changer for us. I eliminated milk, ice cream, cheese etc. But didn't have to eliminate casein, milk in stuff like cakes or bread etc. we introduced milk to her via my breastmilk first then to her around 13 months? She was finally OK with it as a toddler. But she had some stomach issues over a year ago and is now exclusively on soy milk. She's fine with cheese and minimal ice cream. DH is lactose intolerant and my brother is also lactose intolerant. So its entirety possibly (I think) a baby can be lactose intolerant and not complete MSPI.

I think it's definitely worth just starting with major dairy and seeing if you notice a difference. But it can definitely take a month to notice a difference.

I cut it out for a few weeks then slowly added it back in. Like one serving of dairy a day. You could try coconut yogurt. Maybe daughter was more sensitive to soy than dairy and by 5 months I could eat dairy again but it took til 9 months before I could slowly add sit back in..

Reducing won't work. Dairy stays in your system for so long that even with full elimination it takes about a month for full improvement in the baby. We were just at LO's GI doctor discussing his intolerances and gave me a list of all the tricky dairy ingredients that you might not immediately recognize as dairy like "whey" and was very firm that I have to eliminate completely and for a long period.

ETA: I'm on my second MSPI Baby and elevated temp has never been mentioned as a symptom. Is it possible your LO just has s cold and the mucus is post nasal drip?

My daughter is MSPI and I had to eliminate everything. Yea I don't know if reducing will help, but fingers crossed it is not the true issue.

I've never heard of a fever being a symptom of a dairy intolerance though. So fingers crossed that maybe he just has a little virus messing with his system?

Like @Golden mentions, I wonder if you could handle eating various dairy-replacement products? Because then you could maybe handle eliminating dairy more easily.

My recommendation would be to eliminate all dairy for a few days to see if it helps. If his diapers get better, try adding dairy back in and that should confirm if that is the issue. Then you can make a more informed decision about what to do about continuing breastfeeding or not.

Unfortunately not for me. I can't have soy either and if I mess up, even a little, it is SO obvious. My recommendations would be to try Silk Cashew milk, Becel Vegan and a lot of gluten free breads are also dairy free. And Ciabatta is always dairy free. As are most tortillas and pastas.

LO is 6 weeks old and breastfeeding like a champ. Surprisingly, I am really enjoying breastfeeding (except for the fact that it makes me solely responsible for night wakings).

He has had 2 straight days of mucousy diapers. His temp was 98s yesterday, but spiked to 99.7 last night at 9pm, back to 98.6 in the MOTN, and low 99s today. He has no other symptoms.

The ped wanted us to come in, so we did. She wants me to eliminate dairy and is confident that is the cause. The issue is... I only eat breads and dairy. Literally that's all I eat. Every doctor I've ever seen, including my OB, has been totally fine with this. I take vitamins and get comprehensive blood tests yearly. Please don't comment on / attack me for this diet, I would LOVE to eat like a normal person but other foods, even when hidden, make my stomach churn.

So, I'm going to start by decreasing dairy. Elimination would be honestly impossible for me. If decreasing dairy doesn't work, we will probably start combo feeding with hypoallergenic or elemental formula, and then if that doesn't work, I guess we'll switch to exclusively formula. I really hope this is not the end result; I really treasure (most of) our breastfeeding times.

Anyways... Soooo.... Has anyone had success just decreasing dairy? Any encouraging stories? :-/

Eta: I'm supposed to eliminate nuts too, esp since DH is allergic. Not a big deal bc my only nuts are peanut butter sometimes and Tagalongs :) but, that also means I can't switch to almond milk, etc.
