@Mrs. Pen: My best advice is to just ease into it. You go as fast as you can no matter what the speed is. If you don't make it that far, then that's ok! It's about pushing yourself the hardest you can for 30-60s then you get to rest! That's why I like HIIT so much.

@Boopers: that sounds like torture to be honest lol I hate running, but I wish I could run it. I cannot even run a mile straight.

@TurtleDoves: yeah the treadmill at the gym is arrows... But it is high tech with a touch screen so I should play around with it and see if I can program it.

@Mrs. Pen: If I do a 5 minute warmup walk at 4.0, 15 minutes of HIIT alternating between 2.5 and 8.0 and a 5 minute cooldown walk my distance is 1.75 miles in 25 minutes.

@Mrs. Pen: I'm honestly not 100% sure about distance because I do a warm up and cool down and sometimes I add time and sometimes I'll just keep on running at a moderate pace afterwards because I have the energy.
As far as manually turning the treadmill, I have to. I know there are nicer treadmills that allow you to program your routine.
I have to click, 8. 2.8.2. I mean, it's one button with a big "8" on it, so it's not like I have to keep pressing the arrows up until I reach 8mph.

@TurtleDoves: so I check up on this thread every now and then- I was excited to see your results! That's awesome!

So for the treadmill, do you just have to manually time and change speeds? I find its a little "awkward" to have to keep changing it and timing things. Is there a way to enter "run 7mph for 2 mins, walk 3mph for 30 seconds" or something like that? Also is your HIIT just treadmill running? If you do a 20 min run, what is your final distance?

I just did 4 minutes of jumping jacks, but then had no idea what to do afterward! I physically can't do burpees or push-ups (lame, I know) and every time I've attempted burpees I always pull a muscle in my groin and then can hardly walk. I was seeing a chiropractor for it, but it kept happening so I stopped.

So I want the results of HIIT but I find myself clueless as to what to do! I need more sample workouts like @luckypenny posted. But I should watch some you motive videos since I don't know what some of those are.

@Andrea: *blush* thanks for saying so. I am feeling great but, I think I am addicted to worrying about my weight. I was so worried after having baby that I went into CRAZY mode trying to get back into shape. I'm there and even past my goal, but yet I still feel like I need to keep up the crazy-woman act in the gym.
As far as abs go, I do 300 total ( scissor kicks, led lifts, transverse abs, crunches, sit ups, bicycle crunches and plank)
For arms, I do 150 (arm curls, squats with weights, chest Ys, and overhead lifts).

@Andrea: staaaaart! It's weird, but I find it easier than other workouts because you get breaks and it takes all of 15-30mins. Granted, you're more tired at the end, but during it feels like its not that bad. I just keep thinking "30s until my break"

I've been going hard everyday. I see a major difference in tightness of skin and arm muscle definition.
I don't think I'll lose anymore pounds because at this point I am about 8lb below pp weight and that is thin for me. But! I am still doing this because my stamina is getting really high (yay) and I can see my abs and arms benefiting. (I do abwork and arm work on a daily right after HIIT.) Love this, so far!

My eating has been OK. I never cheat on grains or carbs, but I do cheat with sweets. I'm still not where I want to be as far as diet goes.

Just got back from the gym! I got on the treadmill and did a 5 minute warm up, then 7 sets of 60s at 8 mph then 60s at 2.5 mph with a 1.0 incline then I finished with a 5 minute cool down and did some light stretching. I have to ease into running on an incline. I was sweaty and felt very exhausted, which is great!

The way I psyche myself up for HIIT on the treadmill is I focus one hard minute at a time. If I can just get through the 1 minute sprint then I can get a one minute rest and do it all over again!

I really like some of the HIIT workouts I've done that I saw on Pinterest. I think I'm going to aim for 3x a week HIIT on the treadmill and then do weights 1-2x a week.

@TurtleDoves: You should give the kettlebells a try. I feel like they are more multifunctional than dumbbells and Fitness Blender has some good ones and so does Jillian Michaels (all on YT). I'm all about burning as much fat as possible and I feel like I can with the kettlebell. I started using them after reading Tim Ferriss' book, "The 4-Hour Body."

@TurtleDoves: I do but mostly because I'm too cheap to join a gym, haha, they are so expensive in NYC! I'm literally dripping in sweat when I get home, and I'm usually not much of a sweater (I don't drink enough water -- bad!) I'm doing a 5K next Tuesday and I'm hoping this will have improved my time because my first race was only ok.

I did HIIT on the treadmill a few years ago in college to get ready for spring break and I saw a lot of results in how my clothes fit! Now I rejoined the gym after getting inspired by this thread and am easing back into HIIT. I did 60s/60s of 7.0 and 2.5 but I am going to work into something more like @turtledoves listed above. I'm excited!!!

Here's a good HIIT routine I'm doing these days:
- Warmup (2 minutes)
- Run at 6.5 speed on 6.5 incline (10 minutes)
- Sprint at 9-9.3 speed 1 minute, then walk at 3.5 speed for 1 minute (alternate for 10 minutes)
- Run at 6.5 speed on 6.5 incline (5 minutes)
- cool down (3 minutes)

30 minutes of HIIT cardio 4x week or less if I'm doing the long distance runs also. So effective and such a time saver.
