I did that for three years. It would have made me so bitter with a baby at home, TBH (no kids during that time). The commute took 2 hours each way. What made it worse is that to limit his commute, he worked four 10-hour days. So he would get up at 5am, be out the door by 5:30am, get to work by 7:30am and work until 6:30pm, then start his commute home. He didn't get home until 8:30/9pm. He'd have a good deal of commuter traffic too, because he worked in the middle of the city. It was the worst.</p> <p>Now he commutes 70 miles from home 2-3 times a week for a different job. Its way more manageable because he teaches now at a college, so his classes aren't usually during commute hours and he can just drive all the way in without switching over to a train. So his commute is about 60-90 minutes each way, depending on traffic. He teaches a few classes and then heads home. These days, he leaves around 10am, gets home around 7pm. I had to drive to the Marc, take the Marc to the metro, metro to my stop and then walk 3 blocks to my office. </p> <p>Now I drive (5 days a week) 30 miles one way and spend 1:30/day commuting. It blows. I only do this commute twice per week because my company are very gracious in allowing me to work from my nearest office - which is 25 miles away from my home. Still, in rush hour traffic, it takes me an hour and a half to get there (plus 1.5hrs home!). </p> <p>I therefore drive 550 miles per week and spend 21hrs per week in the car!! Wow, when I put it like that is pretty horrific.....!</p> <p>I don't really mind the commute because I enjoy driving - I LOVE putting the music up loud and singing my heart out! Plus, my company pay for my petrol to and from the London office (God love them!) and accept that I will roll in late and leave the office early when the need arises. Before she had her daughter, she did that commute daily. As far as seeing your LO goes, it will depend on his/her bedtime. I switched my hours from 9-5 to 8-4. Usually it's about an hour an 40 each way, sometimes less, sometimes more. I live on the jersey shore and i commute into lower manhattan 5 days a week. Before i got married i lived in north jersey where the commute was much more manageable, but it's been a bit tough. it's hard to get the same kind of job in the same pay grade anywhere near where i live, so i'm sticking with it for now. Thankfully, the commute is long, but very easy. I drive to the park and ride where there are plenty of parking spots 10 min away from my house, and the bus brings me straight to my office, 2 blocks away near wall street. I pick him up around 6 and he's in bed by 7:30. He's still sleeping when I leave in the mornings. I was able to successfully breastfeed to one year though. I pumped while I got ready for work in the morning and three times while at work, and then again after E went to bed at night to make enough for the 4 bottles he would drink while I was gone. Then we breastfed at night and on weekends. I leave my house at 6:40 in the morning, and am at my desk by 8:15, and I leave work around 4:45, and am at home by 6:30 or so. It sucks, but I telework on Wednesdays, so that makes it a tiny bit better.</p> <p>I'm currently pregnant, so I'm now kind of freaking out about having this commute with an infant at home. Will I ever see my child awake during the week? How do you breastfeed/pump with this kind of schedule? It's 65 miles of driving and then I have to park off site and catch a shuttle to my office. Once daycare costs kicked in we were barely making ends meet but we couldn't afford for one of us to quit. We have considered moving so we can both be equidistant from work, but it just makes sense for one of us to be very close vs both be not as close. The other three days I work from a satellite office about 20 minutes from my home.</p> <p>I can only do this because I have my parents that do drop off and pick up for my son. I moved to the Houston area to be with DH and he already owned a home when I moved here. The easiest place to get a job in my field was in the downtown area and the commute wasn't as big a deal before we had E. Now I feel like it sucks up so much of my time and energy. We're planning a move to another state soon, which is why I haven't job hunted. I like my job, but it's not worth the soul crushing commute. I left my desk at 4 yesterday and because it was raining I couldn't make it to daycare before they closed at 6:30. </p> <p>Why do you commute such a long distance? Are you happy with the arrangement? </p>
