Teachers came back Friday and our students start this Thursday. I'm a high school special education teacher, mostly co-teaching sophomore English classes. I'm quite ready for student to start! I'm not prepared as far as getting my coursework ready... but I'm so ready to see my returning kids and to have routine again!

@DesertDreams88: 3 weeks?! Whoa!
I'm not sure...so I have FMLA for 12 weeks which began today and once the 12 weeks are over, I will roll into California Family Rights Leave for up to 12 weeks. Moms or dads can take those 12 weeks at any time during the first year of their child's life. I'm guessing other states don't necessarily have their own version of this? It's largely unpaid but I do get 12 weeks of differential pay during this time. My paycheck for the next 10 months is going to be 3/4 of what I normally make to pay for my leave.

I'm sure the beginning of this school year is going to be a breeze for you compared to other years!

@crazydoglady: are you taking a leave of absence for that long of a break? I know you're in CA so you have better policies, but are they really THAT good? haha

and my year is Aug 6-Memorial weekend. We get a week in October, 3 days in Nov, 2 weeks in Dec, and a week in March. We have early release EVERY Wednesday...... which I have mixed feelings about.

My first day back with the other teachers was July 30th, and my first day with students was Aug. 6th. This is our 3rd week already! This is my first time back working in 6 months, since I've been out on maternity leave since Feb. 16. So I feel a bit rusty but excited to be getting back in the groove - teaching is my passion and I feel like it comes naturally to me, so I enjoy it a lot despite the challenges of teaching in a low-income area.

Same school, same grade, same subject, even the same team this year! In 9 years I've never had the same team, we normally have a turnover rate of 33-50% at my school but not this time :)

Next year the standards are changing entirely for my grade, so boo :(

@bubblegum: Good luck with the start of school! The first year teaching is so fun and hard at the same time.

I have my open house in a few minutes. I'm super excited to see my kiddos again (I stay with them for all 3 years of middle school), but I will miss the summer a lot. I loved staying home with DS. I think I'd like to go back to work for like a month and then have another summer :silly:

I’ve been back at work since the beginning of August and started the second week with students today. I’m at a new school, but still within the district I’ve worked in the past few years and I am loving the change. Good luck to everyone who is about to start and meet your new kiddos!

I’m a MS Spanish teacher and staff is back to work next Thursday. Kids start the day after Labor Day. I will set my classroom up next week, so I’m enjoying my last full week home with my kids. We have all new leadership at my school, so it should be an interesting year.

It was a fun-filled summer with vacations, weddings, and camp schedules, and this week is nothing but a staycation and a countdown to my older son’s bday. It’s been WONDERFUL!

@magnolia: I'm already thinking about Spring Break and a cruise. I'm trying not to pass my anxiety on to my DD.

@pachamama: I would be nervous too so don't feel like you are being crazy. The good news is there's tons of days off in the Fall.

@Chuckles: GIRL don't remind me I have to go back in 2 weeks! (We go Labor day- end of June here iin NY).
I teach 10th, 11th, and college level Spanish in a great district so I never feel like I can complain very much. My students are in general wonderful teenagers so I enjoy working. But I have been having SO much fun with my little guy this summer. We've really bonded and he is so grumpy after daycare. Every day we do such fun stuff (he goes to daycare 2 days a week know). I am sad to leave him.
One thing I am pretty stressed about is the fact my school is undergoing a HUGE construction project. We are built literally on top of an old airport that closed in the 50s. I'm nervous bc I'll be 21 weeks pregnant and who knows what I'll be exposed to. They did a little asbestos mitigation in June close to where my new classroom will be. It makes me very wary to know there could be PCBs leftover from airport contamination. I'm thinking of making a call to OSHA but idk... am I being crazy?

Whoot whoot!! I'm pumped! It's my first year teaching but I am BEYOND nervous about how it's going to go. I had my heart set on younger kids but I got 3rd grade but I'm starting to get excited about teaching little 8 year olds. I hope this year is amazing for everyone!

I teach 7th grade English Language Arts. We started back on the 9th for professional development and the kids arrived on the 13th. I worked one week to meet my students and am now on mat leave until February. The first week went well other than being hugely pregnant and hurting, but kids are usually pretty sweet the first week of school until their true personalities come out. It wasn't too stressful besides the physical aspect of things but this is my 9th year teaching the same grade level, so it's a bit like a well-oiled machine.

Wishing all you teachers the best!

@Chuckles: i have two more weeks exactly! I had a work dream last night :crying: We go back the day after Labor Day. I’m a social worker so I’m also in the special education field. It sounds like you do great work, hope you have a good start to your year.

@katsupgirl: the anxiety is real . Last year on the first day I started a countdown until summer vacation  it’s something like 180 work days

Any teacher bees already back at work or going back soon? How are you feeling about the school year? Do you have lots to do to prep or are you pretty much set already?
I teach middle school students with autism in a (mostly) self-contained class. Staff went back last Thursday and our students start on Wednesday. I have *so* much to get done before then. I have 7 returning students and 1 new student, so I'm in a much better place than the beginning of last year, but it feels like the work is neverending. The best thing is that I'm pretty much fully staffed with teaching assistants, so that will be a welcome change from last year.
