@banana: He interacts really well with adults, he has been evaluated by the local head start type program and while they see some delays (motor skills mainly) it isn't severe enough to qualify for assistance. They don't seem to have any options like the developmental play assistance at least not without other issues. He too will ignore other kids or worse-- stop playing and just watch the other kids and insist on leaving.

@Honeybee: The pediatrician helped us get started with the head start program but hasn't been much help with the social/independence stuff other then telling us that "a basic $20 a day daycare would be the solution." A new pediatrician might be on the list too :)

I think part of is hard because most 3s are just hardwired to want to at least give these skills a try but we are at wits end!

I would mention this to your pediatrician and see if s/he has any resources that might help!

@Cole: How does he interact with adults? Does he try to initiate play with them or does he prefer to play independently? One of my best friends has a son who is extremely independent an prefer to play by himself. He doesn't really initiate play with other children and often ignores them. He's getting developmental play therapy and occupational therapy through state-funded services.

Does anyone have any resources or ideas for me in regards to a child who doesn't really seek independence? All the milestone charts etc just point this out as a given that they pretty much demand it but we aren't there yet.

The child can play alone but that is about the end of it. Unfortunately, it isn't a case of stubbornness like "I can do it but don't want to" it is more like "I am not going to bother learning how to put socks on and if you don't do it I will just live without it.” And if it were just socks it wouldn't be an issue but there isn't much intrinsic motivation to learn any life skills, self feeding, wiping hands, dressing, toileting etc.

I would love any articles, anecdotes or ideas, or even what type of specialist to look into. Some things that might help- like classes with other kids are hard (though we do some) because the child will usually meltdown about leaving the house and also has a hard time interacting with other kids.

Thank you!
