@Bubbles: We have the same as you - a normal inhaler plus the spacer with mask. Honestly, they just get used to it over time (and then sometimes regress).

With Xander in the beginning, I would lay him on the floor and sit on him to pin him down and then just hold the mask to his face and hold his head to keep him still. He's scream the entire time, but it also meant he was taking these BIG gulps of air and getting the medicine!

Now he's more used to it. Last night, he was just sitting up and I was able to put it to his face and just do it and he held still and breathed in the medicine on his own. So it just takes time.

For us, the nebulizer was just as bad, except it takes longer! He's scream for the whole 7-10 minutes he was supposed to be breathing in the medicine and fight it. That's why I opted to get the inhaler instead - I can hold him down myself for the 2 puffs (and 6-7 breaths each), but trying to wrangle him for 10 minutes? Not happening!

Good luck! And be good about giving him the medicine! Xander's had to go to the ER multiple times because of breathing issues before he was diagnosed with asthma and now he has to take a control inhaler twice a day PLUS the albuterol every 4 hours when he's got a cough or wheeze.

@Bubbles: You don't have a chamber? I think a chamber with a mask would make a big difference.

@looch: Just looked up nebulisers, they look ideal if you can just hold it near his face! I will have to speak to the doctor and see if this is an option - though looks like you can buy them online if the NHS doesn't fancy forking out! Thank you

@Bubbles: ahhh, no, we use a nebulizer with albuterol.

Maybe that's an alternative?

Thanks so much for the replies. @Mamaof2: I think albuterol is the same as what he has - but is yours in some sort of constant vapour form? Ours is just a little inhaler (just like an adult would use), and a plastic tube with mask on the end which attaches. So I have to press the inhaler twice and then the stuff is in the tube, then he has to suck it out.

@Corduroy: Screen time is definitely worth a go, but not sure he will care enough! He doesn't mind sitting still but very much minds me messing with his face.

@looch: Do you mean just the end of the inhaler? Ours is like this…

We don't use the mask either, we use the "nozzle."

My DS was on albuterol a few times and I was told that he didn't need to wear the mask - I could just hold it near his face so he would naturally breathe it in - is that an option for you? (ask your doctor) DS had no problem sitting in my lap and doing it that way!

DS is 11 months, he was prescribed an inhaler at 6 months as he developed a really bad chest.

The doc thought it might be a seasonal thing as it was summer and the pollen count was really high at the time, but it has continued on - every time he gets even the slightest sniffle of a cold it is followed by about 6 weeks of heavy wheezing and coughing. This morning he woke himself up at 4.30am having a coughing fit and couldn't get back to sleep

Anyway I need to get better about having him take his inhaler - I usually manage about once a day at the minute but clearly that is not enough, and I'm not even sure how much of it is going in. He has an attachment with a little mask which I hold over his nose and mouth, but he fights so bad. He obviously doesn't like the taste of the vapour and he rips the mask straight away from his face. He's so strong and I hate to overpower him so I end up putting off doing it, which is terrible of me really.

Anyone got any magic tips to get him to accept the inhaler? Thanks in advance!
