@buttermilk: @bluestriped bee: Thanks! Of course, I was way harder on myself and found a zillion things wrong with it, but overall, I'm proud. And I learned a lot, so I know what to do differently in the future. :) Not bad for the second cake I've ever done with fondant though!

Just a follow up, it went great! Thanks for the advice folks. :) There was a minor issue with some bulging on the side, but I'm pretty sure that I know what happened and how to prevent it in the future. And more importantly, not a person there cared. I'm the only one who could even tell. :)

@buttermilk: Oh, that's very helpful, thank you! Probably just doing one tier. I've never tried stacking, and since this shouldn't be a huge party I don't think they'd need one that big anyway.

In terms of transporting, it isn't nearly as scary as it seems. I used to be nervous when I first started making wedding cakes but ive never had a problem!

For each tier, you want to buy a cardboard cake box and cardboard round that is 2" bigger than your cake. Also buy a cake round that is the same size as your cake. You'll decorate it on the matching size round. Then assemble your bigger box and round and I use strong duck tape to tape the smaller round & cake to the bigger round in the box. Voila! It shouldn't budge in the box, just try to keep it on a flat surface in your car. Then you just pry the round off the duck taped round and put on your cake stand.

Are you doing more than one tier?

@yoursilverlining: I literally just bought my first polymer clay last week. So you probably are thinking of me (I mentioned it in a thread), but can't say yet how it's going to go! :)

@Torchwood: You work with polymer clay, right? (Or am I thinking of someone else? lol) If yes, I haven't found fondant to be terribly different from working with polymer clay, so I think you'll be fine.

I don't know how large the cake has to be but it might be easier to bake the cakes on parchment lined sheetpans, cool the pans in the fridge and cut the layers out with a large round cutter:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002A5BU5M/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1427220099&sr=8-1&keywords=8+round+cutter&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&dpPl=1&dpID=319o5wdCFTL&ref=plSrch

You can also cut half moons out with the scraps on the side since it won't matter in the layers once you sandwich it all together.

@blackbird: I did a cake with marshmallow fondant a couple weeks ago. I have a lot of americolor dyes, but I'll need some tools for those particular details.

@BoogieBea: Yeah, I use marshmallow fondant for sure. Easy and yummy! And I'll break it up. I made one with just two layers (this will need at least twice that for height), and even doing it over 2 days I spent most of the second day on it.

I made a fondant cake the first time I made my son's birthday cake. It was easier than I expected because I also copied a designed from a photo. I made the marshmellow fondant and that's supposed to taste better than the other type of fondant. It was definitely tedious and time consuming though. I did the baking and decorating all in one day and night but totally could have broken the tasks up into multiple days. Pretty design!

transport, i think my friend transports each tier individually and then stacks when she gets to the event. You can make the details on the second tier ahead of time.

I just made a cake with marshmallow fondant. It was messy but not terribly difficult. To replicate that second layer, you'll need some tools and a lot of different types of dye (check out Americolor)

Eek! One of DH's coworkers is officially commissioning me for the baby shower cake for another coworker! She knows I'm a total beginner, and her expectations aren't overly high, but I really want to do well. Has anyone made anything similar, and have any tips for it going well? I plan to practice a ton beforehand on a cake form.

Pretty much replicating the second tier on this, except with a ribbon instead of grass. I think I'm mostly worried about it winding up not flat enough, and transportation. But I have a month and a half to practice!

ETA- Saying this is my first isn't entirely accurate. I've done a layer cake with fondant and decorations before. I've just never done one for anyone else, or for anything other than, "ooh, that sounds like fun."
