I would be way happier flying in the first trimester than when I did for 9 hours over two flights at the beginning of the third trimester. Although...that is a really long flight. I drank lots of water, wore compression stockings, and got up to walk every hour. I also did squats in the washroom and stretched a bit because I felt stupid doing it in the aisles...

@Aimed121: we traveled to Greece (24 hours each way) when I was 5-6 weeks with DD, no problems at all. We will be going to Hawaii when I'm 9/10 weeks this time, and the only reason I'm nervous is because we are flying with our 13 month old! I think it's just important to stay hydrated and get up and walk every once in a while.

We recently discovered that #2 is on the way! (Yay!) Meanwhile we have a trip planned for when I will be about 10 - 12 weeks, not quite as long as yours @Ree723: but still about 20 - 24 hours. Just checking in to see how your trip (or anyone else who traveled long distance managed) and any tips! I have a Dr appointment before so I will speak with him about it, he knew that we were planning this and said that there should be no problems but I am a nervous nelly! All advice welcome!

I didn't fly that long of a distance, but I don't think you really need to do anything differently than you normally do. I'd pack some extra snacks just in case, as well as a doctor's "note" that says how far along you are.

Ask your doc about the compression stockings, he/she may be able to write you a prescription for them. You may also need the really long ones that go up to your thighs.

I would ask your doctor to be sure. My doctor told me to get up and walk every hour, to stay hydrated, and to make sure and snack a lot to help with my horrible morning sickness. It sounds like you've been lucky with that so far, so I hope it continues. :)

Thanks ladies - I was wondering about the compression stockings but it seems a lot of people recommend them so I guess I will try them. I'm also sure with the amount of water I plan on drinking I will be up walking around (to the bathroom) a lot!

make sure you buy some compression stockings, and that you get up fairly frequently to walk the aisles a bit. I flew from NY to cali right at the start of my second tri, and thats what my doctor recommended

i'm going to vegas soon so i'll have to worry about this too. although it's only la fraction of the time you're travelling. i think the main thing is to make sure to get up and walk around so you don't develop any blood clots.

I drove across the US very early in my first trimester - just be prepared to have to pee a lot. Apart from that, as long as you aren't having severe morning sickness it shouldn't be any different than flying pre-pregnancy!

I'm heading home for Thanksgiving and can't wait to visit with family and friends; however, I will be flying in from Australia, which means about 29 hours of travel each way. It's not a fun journey at the best of times, but given I will be just shy of 10 weeks when I fly out, and 12 weeks when I return, I'm a bit nervous about how it's all going to go.

Anyone take any long distance flights during the first trimester? Any tips or advice as to how to make it bearable? So far, I've had no MS and am hoping it doesn't make a surprise appearance in the next week or so. I plan on drinking loads of water and have already requested an aisle seat, but any other advice from pregnant moms who flew long distance? Thanks!
