Oops! Thank you for all the responses ladies! I forgot to subscribe to my own post, so I thought I wasn't getting anything!

I love that it helped improved fertility for some of you! That really gives me hope. I'm definitely scared as I have a high clinical suspicion of endometriosis (no laparascopy yet to confirm) and am really scared that they are blocked. I'll definitely take the valium my doc prescribed and ibuprofen beforehand.

@travellingbee - I am currently waiting for my period to come. I'm 12 dpo and have been dark brown spotting since 7 dpo (ugh!). Once my period comes, I am supposed to get the HSG done somewhere between CD5-12 of my next cycle, so I think next week. When are you getting yours done? I hope yours will be quick and painless.

I would also recommend taking whatever pain meds they likely already recommended for you. I think I took Tylenol. I didn't have lasting pain, but I did have an unpleasant HSG, itself. I "overachieved" with having a quite full bladder, and it turned out I had some blockage, and they needed more volume of dye than usual, I guess. I felt a lot of pressure & cramping & then when it was over & I sat up to discuss the results with the Dr and I ended up feeling like I was going to pass out, so they had me lay back down for 15 mins & drink some juice before they let me leave. I hope it goes well for you, but wanted to share, so you know what could happen. I hope yours is quick & painless. Oh, & that was in July & we conceived in Aug. :goodluck:

Oh, and maybe bring your partner or someone with you. After the fact, I had wished that I wasn't alone and didn't have to drive myself afterward. It wasn't awful, just a bit more jarring to my system than I had expected.

Yes! Take some advil before hand. And drink lots of water too. And be sure to eat something. The adrenaline that mine produced made me really light headed and dizzy for a while.

Mine was the saline version (maybe not actually called an HSG, but same idea). I had a small blockage that actually was popped by the procedure. Yowza! That was unpleasant. But I got pregnant THAT cycle, after a year and a half of trying. It's true what they say!

Drugs! Take all the drugs! :D kidding. No, I'm actually not. Most ppl are fine, but you don't know going in if you're going to be the one clawing the table and then passing out or the one asking if they've started when they're already done. So I vote take the drugs, I took 800 of Motrin & a 1mg klonopin. I'd take more if the ever made me go again. That said, they found uterine abnormalities which prob made mine more unpleasant than someone with a normal system, but I wouldn't have known that before having it, so again, better to be over medicated than under IMO. They also had to do mine more than once with different size instruments. I spent the wk end on the couch after. It sucked, but chances are yours will suck less :)

Luckily my tubes were clear so my hsg was painfree. My hysteroscopy on the other hand was horrible.

I took an Advil about 30 minutes before the HSG and it was pretty much completely painless. I had mild cramping for about 10 second as the dye was injected. I had expect that to just be the start, but then they said that was it! No worse than period cramps for me. I was planning to take the rest of the day off from work (I went during lunch), but ended up just going back in cause I felt 100% normal by the time I got dressed and back out to my car.

I took ibuprofen before and that helped. I didn't really have any cramping afterward, just during the procedure. Definitely bring a pad! I had some dye and some spotting after.

I've had two now and neither was particularly painful. The first was very emotional because I knew I would get the results there and then, so I was a bit scared. The second was easier though. I would take a couple of painkillers beforehand but other than that you should be okay. Good luck!

I took Ibuprofen before and a few doses after for residual cramping. They gave me a large pad to wear home and I had spotting for a day or two. I conceived that month. Good luck! :goodluck:

Painful and crampy during the dye injection but take some Advil before. Also bring your own pad! I was dripping blue dye afterward.

It's true-the dye can unblock your tubes!

Just as the title says.... does anyone have tips on getting through an HSG? How was it?

I also heard that even if your tubes are blocked at the time of the HSG, sometimes the contrast can unblock it and increase fertility for the next 3 months. Is this true?
