Thanks for asking this question! I don't do tri's, but DH and I both do long distance running so still interesting topic :)

@Maysprout: Oh good idea about taking LO to the pool while the other parent swims -- at least I feel like it's more of a family outing that way.

@CupQuakeWalk: Good point... I think I'm forgetting about the whole exhausted new mom thing :silly:

@NorCalWayfarer: Honestly, you can do it :) The only times I do not workout is not because of lack of time, or lack of ability to make it work with childcare; it is because I m EXHAUSTED. That, I will say is the downfall.
I could have all the sitters in the world at my disposal, but if LO was up all night teething, then I just don't have it in me to get any workout in that day. That, I will admit if my pitfall!

When we just had one LO I pushed her in the BOB but also had some times when I'd go out sans stroller (the stroller is HEAVY!), now that we have two I pretty much just go when DH can watch them. We have a bicycle trainer (kurt kinetic one) so I hook my bike up inside and ride sometimes. DH bikes to and from work and he switches up runs and bikes outside a little more than I do (I mainly run when I'm outside). In the summer we got a pool membership and we'd switch up who swam and the other one would play with LO. When family visits though we go on runs or bike rides together while we have babysitters.

My husband is doing a tri this summer. It's his first so very short distances. I'm not doing it do so we're obviously not training together. We did both train for a marathon last year. We brought the kids along with us on shorter runs but for our long runs, we alternated solo parenting. He'd do one day of the weekend and I'd do the other. And we'd go super early in the morning so that we'd get back early. It was a very time consuming process. We did our last long run together - we had a friend watch our kids for us for a few hours. Perhaps that might be an option? Do you have close friends or family nearby?

@CupQuakeWalk: Wow good for you guys! I don't think I'm comfortable putting a trailer or seat on our road bikes (yes to around town bikes though). We do have trainers so I could pop on our bike in the garage while LO naps. I think for the swims and long bike rides we'll have to either take turns or find a sitter. But good to hear that you guys make it work!

@NorCalWayfarer: 1/2 ironman is my goal, one year as well. I'm guessing we are quite a few years out from it but I will eventually do one!

@NorCalWayfarer: We are by NO MEANS, AT ALL, WHATSOEVER, Triathalon type folks. So far from it.
But, we do work out 7x/wk.
Basically, if it is just a run, I take LO with us, and dh & I switch who has to push the stroller. Also, you could do the same thing with a bike seat on your bike rides.
But for everything else (dh swims in our gym's pool), we take turns going. I will go sometimes before DH goes to work (9:00am is when he goes), and he will go after LO goes down for bedtime (8pm)
I also go during the day if LO has daycare (I send him 2x/wk for a couple hours).
And then again, we will both go on long jogs and stuff anytime we can get someone to watch LO.
So, it doesn't matter when in the day we do it, we just make sure it gets done.
There have been times when dh wasn't home and lo was asleep, so I just ran my staircase over and over. Also, we have a treadmill, so sometimes I am forced to stay in and get my run in during nap time. It has become fun knowing that it is so possible.

@jetsa: That's my concern too -- I feel like we'd never see each other if we switched off doing swim/bike workouts on our own while the other watches LO :-( Maybe we'll just have to stick to shorter distance races, but I *really* want to do a 1/2 Ironman one of these years!

Great question. My DH and I were just discussing this. We think we can do runs with the bob and bike rides with a baby seat on the bike but how do you do swims. One of us go then the other? There just isn't time for that in our evenings. I really wanted to do 2-3 triathlons this year and I don't see how, getting a run in after work is hard enough!

I want to get back into triathlons once LO arrives but I'm having a hard time imagining how DH and I can both have a realistic training schedule while managing to see each other during the week. Running with LO shouldn't be a problem, as long as he likes the BOB stroller. I'm just not sure how to get in long bike rides and swims. Did you hire a babysitter? Did your SO stay home while you train and then switch off if your SO trains too? I'm just curious to see how two athlete families make their training schedules work with LOs!
