New studies are showing that identical twins can have a genetic component as there are families with many sets.
As far as not knowing if a set of twins (same gender) are identical... if they have the same blood type you can order a DNA test that involves a mouth swap and find out for sure ;)

I am due in April with 2 boys... they are Di/Di twins, meaning 2 sacs and 2 placentas... which is an indication that they are fraternal; but there is a 30% chance they are identical.

Fraternal twins also don't "skip" a generation as a rule... it just seems like they do as naturally conceived fraternal twins result from the mother hyper-ovulating... A father with twins in his family could pass the gene to his daughter but would not have an increased likely hood of conceiving fraternal twins based on his genetics alone.

Having twins definitely changes the game a lot... I live in Chicago and childcare for 2 is about going to break us. We'll make it though!

My grandma had a fraternal twin sister; my husband has a twin sister too. Growing up I always wished that *I* had a twin! I imagined it would be so much fun to have a built in best friend like that... though in reality, my husband and his sister are not very close.

As for having twins myself- part of me thinks it would be really fun, and part of me is scared of how much work it would be. As of now we are looking at trying IVF and probably having 2 embryos transferred, which means it would be a possibility... so I've been thinking about it a lot lately.

My FIL is a fraternal twin (he has a twin sister). There are no twins on my side of the family though so DH and I won't have any increased chance (although I honestly don't think I'd mind twins).

No twins in my family, however my cousin just announced last month that she is having them! Neither her nor her husband have them on their side. I've had dreams several times that we have twins (which I'm okay with) however it is very unlikely. I think if I'm going to get them I want to start with them not end with them :)

I have three sets of twin cousins! One of each, boy/boy, girl/girl and boy/girl. And another cousin (not a twin herself) just recently had twins.

At my work there are 4 sets of twins.

I'm surrounded :)

@PitBullLover - You should be safe on the twin thing :)
Fraternal twins can run in families because there's a gene that causes women to release more than one egg during a regular cycle. So your husband's sister likely has a better-than-average chance of having fraternal twins, but you wouldn't.

I have three sets of twins in my family, all cousins.
DH was actually a twin but his twin did not make it and was lost early in pregnancy. DH's siblings are triplets, there where 4 babies originally but once again his mother lost one early in pregnancy. Hers were natural and not a result of fertility treatment or anything.

@MrsBeach: I've heard that too, that fraternal twins are hereditary and identical twins aren't. I don't have anything to back that up though.

My grandma (mom's mom) had triplets, and 9 single births besides that. A lot of her siblings had fraternal twins. Her siblings' grandkids have at least one set of twins, but I'm not super close to them, it could be more. But none of my mom's siblings had twins. So it's definitely possible that it skips a generation? If it's all true then I'm all set to have triplets... ha. I tease FI about it all the time :)

I'm a twin! I have an identical sister...though I'm not 100% sure if we're identical or not. Back when we were born things were a bit less sophisticated as to how they determined if you were identical or fraternal and wasn't always accurate. We always believed that we were, so I'm happy to keep thinking it! The weird thing is that on my mother's side there are seven sets of twins - all same sex sets and believed to be identical. But when I read about this, I read that identical twins are not hereditary, only fraternal are. So either we're all actually fraternal and the doctors were wrong in every case or there's something strange going on in my family! Either way, I'd love to have twins. It was so fun growing up as one! We're not TTC yet, but I will definitely be excited about that possibility :)

I'm a daughter of a twin, so I know there's a possibility I'll have twins. My grandmother was 40 when she had the twins, though, so I think her age probably had more to do with it than a genetic predisposition to have twins.

My husband has a twin sister. Don't know what that means for the possibility of us having twins. I don't think I'd want twins though because even though they share a special bond I can't imagine raising two infants of the same age at the same time!

My friend just had twins (well 6 months ago now!) and there are no twins in her family. She ovulated twice. So she got pregnant, then 2 weeks later ovulated again, and got pregnant again!

It's not necessarily that twins skip a generation, rather, it's that the daughters of twins are more likely to have twins than twins themselves. I read a study that explained that twins were more often born to women who were of a larger size, from the East Coast, over the age of 35, were taller than 5'6" and some other characteristics. Of the 7, we realized that I met 5 of the 7 (not older than 35 or from the East Coast) and both of us were twins. We figure out that my odds for having twins was something like 1/5, so we'll see.
