My guy is a short napper, 30 minutes until he was prob 4 months... The more I fought it the worse it was. Swaddle and white noise and she'll maybe start sleeping longer!

I would prioritize getting your baby to take longer naps however you can do it and then work on putting them down. I would want them to be able to take a longer nap (2 sleep cycles or like 90 minutes) and then once I knew they were getting enough overall daytime sleep, I would work on putting them down in a crib.

At 8 weeks DS2 knew how to take 2 hour naps, so I did let him fuss 10 minutes at the start of each nap and would go in and do checks/pat/rock and then put him back down as soon as he was calm again. I didn't leave the dark sleep space, I kept him in there so he knew it was sleep time, and just kept putting him back down.

We swaddle, white noise, and hold/rock until eyes are closed for about a minute. For night time, we just put her down drowsy and she is able to put herself to sleep.

Her day time sleep is just terrible. She won't stay asleep. Is it possible to do some light sleep training at this age?

I was never able to put my LO down for even 10-20 min at that age. He napped in his bassinet for a very short time as a newborn but after a few weeks, he completely refused. So I held him for all of his naps for many weeks. We still implemented a solid routine from the beginning but it didn't really click for a long time. I want to say he didn't nap in his crib until after we night trained him at 5 months. Then after that he was ok in his crib for naps too.

@erinbaderin: same here. My daughter would take looooooong naps at that age on my chest. As soon as I put her down though, she'd pop right up.

My solution was to never put them down but that may not be a good option for you.

My almost 8 week old takes super super short naps. Like 10-20 mins. I recall LO1 taking at least 30 min naps, but LO2 will wake up 10-20 mins after I've put her down. All day, every day. After the 10-20 mins, I go in and rock her again. I did this with LO1 also, but I can't remember whether the naps lengthened naturally, or whether it was after nap training.

Do they lengthen on their own, and when?
