@AmeliaBedilia: John G's is the best.

We have found eating out for seafood is often less expensive than buying it at the grocery store.

@wheres_c: agree with you on the sprawl. Once you're in a community, be it Wellington or Gardens, etc the surroundings look nice, otherwise the roads and city leading into downtown WPB are an eye sore.

@wheres_c: I secretly miss the strip malls! My surgeons office was on the first floor of an apartment building here. Wtf! ? And these DC winters have been brutal for us southern wimps lol.

We went to WPB on our honeymoon four years ago, so I don't know what it is like to live there. As for food, we ate out a ton and there were lots of good restaurants. We still talk about John G's for breakfast and the $9.99 lobster lunch. Lots of seafood and key lime pie. :goodluck:

One of my best friends grew up here with me and lives in DC now and says it is way more expensive in DC!

My sister is actually moving to that area this summer and she was looking at adorable townhomes in Wellington, and Jupiter area 2br 2b 1,400-2,000 a month not as bad as DC :)

I just left palm beach county...I lived there after living in DC and I hated it.
Price wise, it was comparable...
I hated the weather, and the strip malls and that there was no real city, just sprawl.

we have family there. they have a baby and tons of friends with small kids. whenever we visit, we go out to great restaurants, and i've gone to yoga and spinning there. there are tons of east coast transplants there, and it is definitely not all old people. for me, it's way too hot, but otherwise, it seems like a great place to live. good luck!

Thank you so much ladies!!! I'm from ATL, and we were number 3 for most likely to cause a heart attack traffic after LA and NYC a couple of years back. DC traffic people complain about, but I haven't seen anything worse than ATL. 8 lanes of pure hell lol. So, it may sound crazy, but it's a fact of life we've come to expect! We are completely okay with the area being more expensive than what we think, but honestly we live in one of the most expensive cities in America (#4 for 2013) :crying: Our living expenses are almost $3,000 a month on a 1BR Rental  I honestly think that's the absolute worst thing about living here. So, while I don't think it's going to be an absolute "steal,", anything cheaper than that is an upgrade for us. We have military insurance, and I'm going to call them to get a feel of what insurance would be like on homes down there. Thanks for all the tips on places to live! I'm submitting my application today :)

I live about 20 mins south of WPB! I think you may find it more expensive than you expected. I am not from south FL, just moved here a few years ago. I have found housing prices, food, gas, etc. to be pretty expensive.

Where we live... a LOT of old people. LOL. We are about to move to a more kid friendly neighborhood. People are pretty rude down here, I find, but I'm a Southerner so that my color my perspective.

Traffic is horrible all the time, especially from Oct - May. That's "snowbird season." It just takes a long time to get anywhere.

The weather is gorgeous, of course, pretty much all year round. It's pretty nasty and sticky in the summer, but it's like that everywhere. Just take a DC summer and add some more humidity.

Keep in mind also that insurance for everything (car, homeowner, etc.) is more expensive than anywhere else in the country. If you buy a house, you have to deal with hurricane issues (make sure you have hurricane shutters, etc.), pool issues (most houses have them), etc.

There is a lot of great culture, places to eat, shopping, etc. in WPB. And you can drive to Miami and Fort Lauderdale for more culture things. I much prefer the WPB area than Fort Lauderdale/Miami - it's definitely quieter and way less seedy. Downtown WPB is really nice.

Someone suggested Wellington, which is nice, but I would DEFINITELY encourage you to rent for a year down here and decide where you want to live based on traffic. You may think "oh, living 15 or 20 miles away isn't so bad" but change your mind once you're here and stuck in traffic a lot.

You're also an easy 2.5 hour drive to Orlando, which is awesome for going to Disney, Universal, Canaveral space center, etc.

If you have any questions, you can ask me!

@dc yoga bee: Ballen Isles is a beautiful development in Palm Beach Gardens. The houses are 15-20 years old, but may look new. There's also PGA National. Palm Beach Gardens is quiet. There's a couple strips with good places to eat and the mall is great.

GL homes is in building a community called The Bridges, starting at $600s in Western Delray. Delray borders Boca Raton. Eastern Delray near the water has great art galleries, restaurants and probably a yoga studio or two.

Downtown WPB before get to Palm Beach Island boasts an outdoor mall with some chain restaurants, a club district that has cool places to eat during the day. Downtown WPB has a great antique and design district.

Since the weather is great year round there's stuff for kids to do year round. Sports is really big here. Jupiter, which is north of Palm Beach Gardens, has a baseball stadium that's the spring training camp for the Dodgers I believe.

I moved with my family from DC to a suburb of WPB called a Wellington about 15 years ago.

Depending on how long of a commute you are willing to embark on I would suggest Wellington- good public schools, there are two pilates studios. The other decent areas to live in and around WPB, which is actually kind of crummy include western Delray or Boynton Beach. Most of the people I know with school aged children send their kids to private school or somehow get them in Boca Raton public schools, if they are not already in Wellington. Palm Beach Gardens and Boca Raton are really nice areas to live as well, but they take further away from the center of WPB. Home insurance is quite expensive, so while you can get a beautiful older, Florida style home close to the intercostal (waterway before you reach barrier islands and ocean) the cost to insure may be cost prohibitive.

The further south you go or at least being close to a highway makes it easy to navigate to other South Florida cities like Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

@kjpugs: Um, you're full of good ideas this morning ;)
The position would start in June at the absolute latest. So, if I got it I definitely like the option of renting for the summer. True, we would need to research the neighborhoods more, but $300-400K for single family 4 bedroom homes!?!? We are looking at $700-800K for something comparable in our area. But, we don't want an old neighborhood! I'm working on my application now <3

@Beebug: I wish I could hop there for a quick visit, but I'm going to apply anyways!

It's an amazingly beautiful area and I believe I just saw one of their schools on a top 30 list in FL? I live in Orlando but travel there somewhat frequently for work. DH would LOVE to live there (he prefers gulf side but that's where he'd want to be for Atlantic side) and what's nice is that FL has a lot of options. You can do a weekend in Miami, go to Disney, the beach, golf, you have amazing food at the coast- it's delightful. Cost of living is probably one of the priciest in FL but I'm sure you'd find it more affordable, just maybe not as affordable as you think. I'd suggest renting for a year before buying because you'll want to get to know the area and find a place you like. You don't want to buy and end up in a neighborhood of all old people, etc. There are also seasonal rentals (old people who go up north in the summer) so maybe you could rent for a few months until fall, if the position starts in time. Definitely something to look into! Good luck :)

@T.H.O.U.: Thanks!! I haven't had time to do a whole lot of research (okay I spent most of my workday yesterday looking it up), but a mortgage down there in a golf course community would literally be almost half of our rent on our 1BR apt :bummed: The cool thing is I wouldn't need to take a paycut either!

I'm sure coming from downtown DC it will be cheaper, but not very cheap by any means. I would consider WPB one of the more expensive places to live in FL. There are all kinds of areas down there and many are very pricey.

I know lots of young people and families that live down there. I wouldn't worry too much about the old people at all.

My best friend has lived there for the past 18 years! We go down there 2-3 times a year, so I'm pretty familar with the area. LOVE it down there! Palm Beach Gardens is a great area, lots of upscale shopping and dining. It's close to the beach, too. Juno Beach is a great area, (close to PBG). The farther North you go, the better the deals on housing. PBG can be expensive, but you'll find the price decreases as you head to Jupiter, Hobe Sound, etc. Of course, that's farther away from downtown West Palm.

As for stuff to do, I love boating, and spending the day on the intracoastal is heaven to me :) Tons of restaurants on the intracoastal, too! Lots of young people. Older people too, but the majority of them are snow birds.

If you have any specific questions, let me know, and I can ask my friend if it's something I don't know :)

One of my really good friends lives there and I went to visit two summers ago. It was so awesome! I can put you in touch with her if you'd like. She's almost 30.

It's seemed expensive to live there but the neighborhoods are small and cute and quaint. Huge dichotomy between super rich old people and everyone else. There's lots of amazing hole in the wall food--jamaican, etc. Very diverse area. My friend does yoga, paddleboarding, lots of active type stuff. We rode bikes to the beach, which was awesome.

Hi Bees! A pretty sweet transfer opportunity is available in my office. West Palm Beach! As the title asks, are there any West Palm Beach Bees?!?! I'm looking for any and all information on what it's like to live there. I have to apply by Monday, so not a lot of time to jump on this. If I apply, my boss will know and it may have some backlash, so that's why I'm not going ahead and applying before I try to get my hands on whether it's worth it to put my name out there for! I've never been to West Palm Beach, and don't have time to jump on the plane this weekend and check it out before applying!

Background: We are in our mid-twenties, ttc, do not club or stay out late. We do like to go out to eat a lot! Shopping, beach time, nice weather, and yoga! Is it mostly old(er) people, what's there to do, do you like it? Even if you've only visited, any info will help!

ETA: We live in DC, so the cost of living for us to go to FL will be CHEAP!!!!! I'd call a Realtor and be looking to buy before even moving there Army style!
