@Raindrop: I finally got to meet with the Diabetes Nurse and the Dietician today so I'm starting to get a handle on what treating a GD diagnosis actually involves. The Nurse was pretty low key and said that I need to do full testing until Sunday (before and after each meal) and then if my numbers are ok I only need to do alternative meals each day. So far even my post-meal numbers have all been low (<5.5 or equivalent to about 100) so it will be interesting to see what happens over the weekend!

The Dietician was a bit more uptight about it but I do at least have an idea of what I need to be eating and when.

@Kemma: Good luck! Let us know how it goes. :)

For like 9pm snacks.... I usually eat a piece of meat (like a slice of ham) or a boiled egg (we have those in the frige at all times now) or some veggies like carrots or cheese.

For my right before bed snack (I sleep late like 11-midnight) to control my fasting number I eat higher carb items like half a bar of ice cream sandwich or half a cookie. Which have been working well for me... but that took me a lot of playing around to figure out I needed more carbs right before I went to sleep. Some people aren't like that. :)

Good luck!

Thanks so much for all your responses, ladies!

I think the most frustrating part of the process so far is being given a diagnosis on Friday and then not being able to see anybody about till tomorrow (Wednesday). My midwife advised me to cut out the sugar over the weekend but I'm not actually sure what that means apart from the obvious like lollies and coke etc. What should I be eating instead when it's 9pm and I'm starving?!

I saw my midwife for my usual antenatal appointment this morning and although my weight gain is on the high side for the last three months (the same timeframe for the majority of my weight gain with my daughter), Squish is measuring less than a week ahead and my blood pressure etc are all perfect so at this point I'm just rolling with it.

I'm seeing the Diabetes nurse and dietician tomorrow and I'm waiting on an appt to see the obstetrician so hopefully we can get a plan in place to keep my sugars under control and keep this pregnancy progressing without any drama!

Fasting number is the hardest to control!!! It took me months to figure out how to control mine. I sort of believe just de-stressing about it was a big key for me.

@autumnlove: Dang it!! I have so far been able to control my numbers with diet and excerise ... Now I'm worried about if we have LO #3 if I'll have to go on meds. Hopefully you can figure out to control! :) My OB says taking insulin is not so bad though. Good luck!

@snowjewelz: oh I should clarify: I am not the other march mom. I was lucky because diabetes does run in my family but no I didn't get it with this or my last. I do think it can really help one lead a healthier pregnancy though.

I just gave birth last month but I had it! It will be ok! I was upset and scared in the beginning. I also cried before I poked my finger for the first time (it was all in my head!)

It is very annoying having to watch what I ate carefully and test my blood sugar 4 times a day. Silver lining is that my weight gain was very controlled!

I was also put on glyburide to help control my morning fasting #. I'm going back next week to test again for post partum.. Really hope my # is ok!

@autumn love @tinyperson I tried getting up and having a snack in the middle of the night and it didn't work for me at all. Even with the insulin, it's taken me almost two weeks to find the right dosage to get it to where it's supposed to be (around 80). I think some of us just have really really strong hormones interfering at night.

@autumnlove: it's frustrating isn't it?! My endocrinologist said basically my options were to get up in the middle of the night and go for a run, or start insulin :(

I was recently diagnosed 3-4 weeks ago. Honestly after talking to two dietitians and monitoring my sugars I feel so much more in control in general. Be careful with the binging, you can still enjoy those treats just in smaller quantities, the key is in moderation. There was a really good GD breakfast thread recently. I feel like I'm learning skills that will help me and my family be healthier in the coming years. Also as one small bright spot- I have gained 0 lbs since I changed my diet, not like that was the point, but getting back into my regular clothes quicker after baby will be awesome.

@MelisMc: @autumnlove: I had GD with my first pregnancy (and expect I will with any future pregnancies, but who knows!). I also had a hard time controlling my fasting number, no matter what I did. The injections weren't as terrible as I thought, and they took the pressure off so I wasn't so stressed out about my numbers.

@autumnlove: Mine are injectible. I do know some pregnant women do the oral, but I think that it can cross the placenta (in very small amounts), so it wasn't even an option with my doctor. I take it twice a day right now- before bed and first thing in the morning. I have no problem after any of my meals, at least for now.

Sorry to hear this! I was recently diagnosed a little over two weeks ago (at 28 weeks) as well. My one hour test was bad enough that I didn't have to do the three hour. I started trying to control it with diet/exercise (which I think most women are able to do), but I had a hard time with my fasting number. Apparently, that's completely hormone driven, so I'm now on insulin. It's not fun, but it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be either. And the good news is that the diet is a very healthy way to be eating, so I feel good about that! I've even lost a few pounds since I started.

I know it can be overwhelming at first, so feel free to reach out for support!

I'm just over 28 weeks pregnant and after completing my Glucose Challenge (one hour) test yesterday and my Glucose Tolerance (two hour) test this morning, my midwife has messaged me to say that I've been diagnosed with GD. I'm scheduled to meet with the Hospital Diabetes Team next week but in the meantime I'm having one last binge on sugary drinks, white carbs and Christmas chocolates!

Anybody else out there new to the world of Gestational Diabetes?
