@Mrs. Pickle: @SweetiePie: @raspberries: @MenagerieMama: @Pumpkin Pie: @birdofafeather: @agold: @Cole: @yin: thank you for getting so specific, everyone. I appreciate this, I hadn't at all thought out what it would be like to have my iPhone functioning completely as the monitor (and have it be out of commission as a phone all the while). sounds like the Nest/Foscam is great for home/baby surveillance, but I think we will do what you guys did sweetiepie and agold, and do a cheap classic monitor; husband still wants the Nest for spying fun :)
@yin: thanks for the side-by-side opinion!
@agold: your niece, omg, that's so funny.

I have both a nest and foscam, and honestly I'm loving the nest. We also have a nest thermostat, and everything can be accessed through the same app. We use the nest in the foyer to see who comes in and out of the house. It captures the last 3 hours of video, and we have it set to alert us of movement if we are away from the house. While the foscam does a lot of the same features, I prefer the nest. We're looking to buy more. We bought ours last time for $50 refurbished.

We have it and it's been kind of a waste for us-mostly due to cosleeping but also because you have to have the app up and running to get audio. You can get push alerts so you know when to check it but they aren't perfect. At this point she can get up and come get us if we funny hear her but for the next baby we'll say least get a regular audio monitor to go with it.

I have the nest camera. My husband works nights and likes to check on us while he's away. I love that we can talk through it too. We will pay for the one week storage soon. My sister has the nest and one night my neice fell out of bed and cried for her. My sister watched the footage in the morning and saw that my neice first fell out and then got back into bed no problem. And then a few minutes later, crawled out of bed and onto the floor and cried for my sister. She's such an actress!! Anyhow.. We like the nest. We will be getting a simple sound monitor soon though to have in addition.

We actually just bought another one for LO2's nursery (he's still a few months from being born, but DH is excited to set up the tech-y parts, haha.)

@LCTBQE: well we had the regular video monitor first. Then we got the Nest later (my husband is a tech geek and wanted it).
I like having the regular one to keep in our room. I prob don't need it anymore, but I like having a monitor that's always up but doesn't have to be on my phone. Or on my phone/ipad all night.

I also like it for other people watching him - sitters and my MIL. 1) I don't want to have to worry about giving them a personal device to watch on and 2) I don't want them to have the app on their own devices because then they can watch us any time they want.

@SweetiePie: @MenagerieMama: yes, that's what I have in mind :) I wondered if the Nest was a little excessive because we're only in this tiny brownstone floor-through, but the capability to check it away from home sounds fun (like I was thinking my husband would love this while I'm on mat leave and he's lonely at his office). so can I ask why you guys also find the regular monitor to be useful? and by regular, it's just a video with a handheld unit, or it's an audio only?

@Mrs. Pickle: @raspberries: @birdofafeather: thank you for this! would you mind linking to the model you have? there are so many options :)

We have 2, first used as nanny cams and now just security. Love them! Wouldn't use them as the primary monitor though but great to stalk the baby from work or the dogs while on vacation :)

We have a Foscam too, like @Mrs. Pickle: except ours can be wired as well as accessed through Wifi. It was super easy to set up... I actually like it more than the regular baby monitor we started with, and we're planning to repurpose the cameras as security cameras after we're done with babies.

We have nest and love it! We recommend it to everyone expecting their first.
We have a regular monitor as well. But I like that I didn't have to carry it around, but I almost always have my phone with me.
We also love being able to check when we are out/away from home. Not even because we're worried anymore, just because we like to see him sometimes

I have a different camera, a Foscam, and I really like it. The picture is nice and clear even when I zoom in. I haven't had any problems with it. It won't work without wifi though so if my internet goes out I can't pull it up. I'm not sure how that compares to the Nest Cam.

I'm looking at baby monitors and thinking about getting a wifi-based one so my husband and I can check in from our phones. Definitely not necessary, but it sounds cool (and I have an Amazon gift card burning a hole in my pocket :) )

Does anyone have one and like/dislike it? Or is there a similar or better one that you have and love? Thanks!
