Right now, mine are the complete opposite...they never want to come INside. But, I've had a foster child that hated being outside, and we finally worked him up to playing outside up to 10-15 minutes at a time before he left our home...the balance bike is what eventually worked for us.

My oldest enjoys being outside, doesn't do well playing alone. If with other kids, he will stay out much longer.

@jedeve: we have a balance bike and he wasn't into it. We tried to show him videos of other kids riding it but he was still like meh.
I finally just bought him a used bike with the training wheels and he now rides it about 2 minutes at a time. It's very strange... I feel like he doesn't like doing things unless he really knows how.
You're right about going outside regardless of the weather, it's rainy today but he has rain boots now and he loves holding an umbrella so maybe I'll let him do that after school today! Thanks for the tips, I'm going to definitely try to be more consistent with outside play.

We got outside all the time, good weather or bad, but mine will still resist it even if they love being outside.

I think consistency helps. Instead of waiting for good weather, go out on rainy days (who doesn't love puddles?), cold days (promise hot chocolate), hot days, etc.

Does he like going for walks? Mine sometimes get bored just playing in the yard but will keep their interest longer if they have something to do. Nothing fancy, just looking for flowers, naming birds.

Have you tried a balance bike? Most kids don't take to them right away but after seeing other kids do it they will catch on.

Bubbles are always a big hit with my crowd. Or splashing in water - going to a pond, or a water table. Chalk can also be fun.

Sometimes my kids get stubborn if they were just about to do something inside and they are still focused on that. Maybe he just had something else on his mind?

If all else fails, sometimes I will just put them in a stroller and hand them a book to flip through.

Keep trying! Outdoor time is so good for their physical and mental health! He'll come around eventually!

Yes, we went through a really bad patch from 2-3.5! He would scream and scream if I took him out in the back yard. Mine does has some sensory issues (we assume because of his huge fear of the garbage truck, which goes down the alley behind our back yard). We worked through it though, just kept asking until he said yes and only around sunset would he be willing. Other outdoor areas he was pretty good with, but our backyard was a huge freak out for him.

He's much better now at 4, still sometimes won't go out, but for the most part is good about it now. We started with the water table and putting it in the doorway on our patio. It was like a magnet, he was all over it. Then we started edging it farther and farther out into the yard. We tried to keep all yard activities positive and started adding toys he loves like a golf set and t-ball set. He only got those when playing outside, so it upped his interest.

I find if it isn't part of our regular routine- i.e. We fall out of the pattern for a few days, she will resist going out. I'd keep making him, and I'd make him go out everyday. I drag my kid out everyday, regardless of weather and her whining about it. Once she is out she has a great time.
I find she does better with things like a big pot of dirt and shovel, or walking along the river to throw sticks- that kind of thing keeps her engaged more than her outdoor toys seem to.

@Mamaof2: a boy his age came over and said hi, but my son just stared at him... lol

We have small playground in the back, he just really wanted to go inside and play... maybe he was feeling tired yesterday, but I just couldn't get over the fact that I had to YELL at my kid to play outside.

My LO doesn't really like being outdoors unless she is specifically doing something that's an outdoors activity like a slide, the beach, playground, etc.

She HATES getting dirty, hates bugs haha so yeah, she's not really an outdoorsy type. Then again, my worst nightmare vacation would be camping and ditto to my husband so I'm not really surprised LO would have similar inclinations.

My DS doesn't really care about nature or being outside. If there is something to do with me (gardening) or with DH he loves it, but otherwise he could care less about trees, flowers, dirt, bugs....

What does he have outside that he can do? Does he have a sandbox, a play structure, etc?

I noticed if I took my son to the park, he'd want to go home if we didn't have something to do, like kick a ball around, etc.

Any friends that could come over and play with him?

@Truth Bombs: he does have allergies, but they weren't bad yesterday (he wasn't rubbing his eyes or scratching his nose). The sun was already lowered since it was around 6pm, I'm telling you it was the PERFECT DAY! :(

@Mamaof2: Definitely engaging with him. I'm trying to teach him to ride his bike and he went like 10 steps and said OKAY ALL DONE. I finally did convince him to take a walk with me (all while he was asking to go home). Sigh...

I hope this is just a weird stage!

My kids also love to be outside!

Are you playing with him or just watching? Maybe if you get engaged with him he will like it better.

Go on a nature walk and collect sticks and rocks.

Bring out chalk and draw him a path to run on or ride his bike on.

My kids both LOVE the outdoors. But there are two things that bother ME when I'm outside that might be an issue. 1. The pollen is insane right now. So if your LO is sensitive to allergens, he might not have felt well. 2. The Sun. My eyes are crazy sensitive to light, as are my daughters. So maybe try some sunglasses for him.

Totally random thoughts, but they both popped in my head immediately.

I feel like it's hard to get perfect weather around where we live. It's either way too hot, or too cold. Yesterday I was out with my DS to enjoy the weather and he just wanted to go inside to play! I asked him why, and he just kept saying "because" I allow him to bring his toys out and he did, but he lasted about 5 minutes. It came to the point where I said he could go inside and play by himself but I was going to take a walk. MELTDOWN ensued. I swear if neighbors heard us talking they would've thought we were crazy. Who has to convince their kid to play outside??? Is anyone else's kid like this? Any tips to get him to like the great outdoors?
