@mrbee: you guys eat a lot of bananas right? What if you carve a note in the banana peel so that it oxidizes by the time your kids are up? Daddy loves you bananas with hearts and smileys would be a hit at breakfast!

And maybe go onto Amazon or to a 99 cent store and get a huge quantity of those little cardboard gift boxes that jewelry comes in. If you find a rock, put it in a box. It will make the mundane very special!!

@gingerbebe: Ah that's a really great idea! (Haha I feel like such a delinquent dad these days but am lucky that I work right next to our home so it's easy to hang out with the kids over the course of the day.)

@mrsrain: Wow so thoughtful, you are so much better than this than me!

@hotpink: Great idea on paper airplanes and origami! I made my son a paper football the other day and he went bananas for it. I will try out more folded paper projects today and report back!!

I think it's truly the thought that matters with people whose love language is gifts. What makes you think of him during the day?

- a found coin
- a cool shell/leaf/Rock
- a favorite candy
- a favorite fruit
- a picture you take of something that makes you think of him (a cool cloud, a crazy hat you saw, a beautiful sunset, etc)
- a note that you were thinking of him
- a twig shaped like his initial

Anything can be a gift if the thought is right

I agree with the nature-y items, and anything that makes you think of him would be considered a gift! I would probably search out nature type items around the area, and put them all in a little box of some sort and tell him you have a "surprise" for him. He'll love it I'm sure! And even if you're not the best artist, I think he'll probably love anything you make for him. Even if it's a blank white paper with a bunch of stickers on it! :)

Like others, I was going to suggest nature items - a really big leaf, a cool shaped rock, or a pretty shell. If you wanted to make something, there are some cute ideas on Pinterest/Forest School blogs for making leaf people (glue a leaf to an upright toilet paper tube, poke a stick through for arms, glue/draw on eyes, and decorate as you like), or simple critters made of a few shells glued together, or you could do crayon rubbings of items you collect and write a note.

I guarantee you are enough of an artist for your kid. Are his works Rembrandts? Probably not, but you still enjoy them and he enjoys making them. So if your drawings aren't professional quality, that's fine. I'm sure he'd love whatever you make.

The couple on Young house love would search for and collect rocks and pebbles shaped like hearts

is there a special sea shell or maybe colored sea glass?... something that when you do return stateside he can use to remember his time on the island

Print a calendar and write fun dates on it BEFORE you give it to him. That way he can journal or draw pictures of his favorite activity on it. ETA: This was LOs idea for a gift for herself. She begged for it. So kid-tested.

I like the idea of notes, pics, drawings, things you find outside like the crab, etc that PPs mentioned because it seems like you all have worked hard to cut back on material possessions. Not that you can't shop for small items or buy treats, but I think all of those things would be equally special!

It sounded from Mrs. Bee's post yesterday that you are gone before the kids are up and don't get to be around for dinner. Maybe a little note with funny pictures left for them to open from you at breakfast (kind of like how some parents leave notes in kid's lunches) or maybe the next time someone goes to town they can buy a sack of candy or gum and you can leave a piece for them at the dinner table as a surprise once a week or so.

I agree that it can be little things that make you think of him! That always made me feel really special when my parents brought me something. What about taking pictures of things you think might interest him? That way, you're not giving him "stuff", but it's something for you to show him. That's also really fun.

I buy E kids magazines with little free gifts. She is always so pleased with them. We have a shop here called the Pound Shop, which sells all kinds of things for £1. I pick up colouring books, stickers etc from there are squirrel them away so I can pull one out every now and again when she's bored.

@mrbee: maybe it doesn't have to be things you make? ie in Bee's blog post yesterday, she shared that you brought a hermit crab back for C. I think that is a "gift" and it shows that you saw something and thought of him. So I think it can even be things that you see that make you think of him. Then explain why that item made you think of him. KWIM?

My son's love language is also gifts and I've noticed that he loves it when we make things. This weekend, we are making a dump truck out of boxes and other materials.

What about a nature walk, and you can then string the materials you find on a mobile?

You can also cook, my son loves it when we make food together.

My son loves to make me gifts out of arts and crafts, and has started to ask me lately why I don't give him gifts. I am beginning to think that his love language is gifts, and that I need to step up my gift giving!

The gifts don't have to be purchased - he loves anything I can make too. Problem is, I'm not sure what to make for him... he makes drawings for me, but I'm not really much of an artist. Any ideas for other gifts I could make for him?
