Thanks everyone, I think we will try the one car thing for a while and see how it goes, and save for a car in the meantime. :)

Glad he's okay! We live in the burbs where there's no public transportation and things are way too spread out for walking, and we mainly share one car. We have another one but it's super old/creaky/finicky and gets crappy gas mileage, so we only use it when absolutely necessary and generally go out of our way to only drive one. It sounds to me like it would be totally doable in your situation!

So glad he's okay! Maybe you can try going without the second car and see how that goes? Who knows, maybe it will force you to be more efficient about errands?
We live in the city so technically we don't really need a car but we have one. I use it to take LO to music class and play dates but aside from that, we use it once a week to run errands.

DH got in a wreck today, too! Slick roads this morning. We may be a one car family for a little while. We've done it before, but it was easier in our old place bacause I could walk/metro wherever I wanted to go. It really sucks though. This is going to delay our kitchen Reno and new car buying.

We are a single cat family for basically the same reasons you are, except that someone hit me and totalled my car while I was a pregnant and we now only have DH's. What we decided to do is put away the money from the insurance (we got back a similar amount as what you're expecting) and do a one car trial for a couple of months . That way if it didn't work out we had some money stored for a down payment. It works fine for us to have a single car, but DH takes public transit so the car is basically always available to me. The halved insurance payment is awesome.

We have been a one car family ever since moving to cities that have public transportation. I like having one car, and only occasionally feel like I'm stranded. It's worth it to save the money, if you can manage. Maybe you can try it out, since it's temporary? Trying to buy a house and get a car loan at the same time isn't the best. You never know, maybe if you try it out you'll see that you can manage with just one.

@Bao: oh shoot! yeah thats a bit too far, especially with a baby in tow!

I think you can totally make it work. Our neighbours do it, and my DH and I did it a few years back when my car wouldn't start for the entire winter. We just walked into town. It was a pain for grocery shopping in the day - I couldn't get it done. But we just went together when he was home from work with the car.

Oh no! I'm glad he's okay.

We are a one car family. My husband takes the train into the city for work and we are within walking distance of the station so I have the car at home. The only time I don't like having one car is when one of us home with LO without the car, because we don't have any family in the area to help out in a pinch.

@mrs. bird: he is ok. We live in a small little town, and there are things close I could walk to in the warm weather. My mom could help out when needed too. I'm just nervous I've always had my car available now if DH needs it I won't.

We are, because DH takes the subway to work. We don't really need a car where we live, because we can walk to 3 grocery stores, a Target, a mall, many restaurants, and the subway is 3 blocks from our house to take us to Manhattan.

But I have to commute further out to the 'burbs for work, so we have 1 car. And we pay dearly for parking every month, too. BOO.

The only time we drive on weekends is if we go on a weekend trip, or if we want to get a cheaper oil change--we drive out to the burbs and go to Walmart, get an oil change, and do some cheaper grocery shopping. But that's rare.

i'm so sorry! i hope he's ok!

DH & i don't have kids yet, but we shared a car for a little while. we were both working, but we live in a city and there's public transportation so DH would take the bus if he needed to. honestly it sucked, but if you were able to drop him off and pick him up it could work. or if there's public transportation near you or things you can walk to (we can walk to grocery stores, parks, restaurants, CVS, etc) it might be ok with just one car.

Yes, we have one newer car that we lease. My DH takes public transportation to work, and I have the car for work/errands/etc. It is nice not paying double the car expenses, and honestly, we couldn't afford to keep another car.

DH got hit today and his car is now totaled. It really isn't worth much so we will get maybe 2k back if that. As a lot of you know, we are in the process of buying a house, so getting a loan for another (even used) car right now just isn't possible. Does anyone have one car that you share between you and your SO? I am a SAHM so I don't need to go anywhere usually, and if I do my mom lives close and she can take me and LO wherever we need to go. I think this would just be a temporary situation until we are settled in the home in a few months.
