@wheres_c: fun!! I haven't been in ages, and I was only in Bologna briefly and then took the train to Florence (where I was living for a few months).

Personally, I think Pisa is a half day visit at best. If you visit the tower and baptistery you're done. Lucca is a beautiful walled city on the way that I would highly recommend spending a little time in!! Of all of the places I went in Italy, Lucca always stood out!! And Florence is obviously great if you have some extra time.

I studied abroad in Siena when I was in college. My most favorite place in Italy was by far Florence (Firenze). They have a large outdoor market and my most favorite gelato place ever - Gelateria Carabe, which is nearby the Galleria dell'academia where Michelangelo's David statue is. I agree that Pisa can be done in a day, it's very touristy. I did visit Bologna and while there, visited nearby Parma (where Parmesan cheese comes from!), but I can't remember very much from that trip. Enjoy your time there!

I haven't been to Bologna, but studied in Italy and have been back a few times. Pisa was kind of 'meh' for me, but if you haven't visited Florence, I would definitely check it out! I could wander that city for weeks  Also, you can see the leaning tower, duomo, & baptistery in Pisa in about 1/2 day from Florence, so you may have more time than you think

I'll be headed to Bologna for work and wondered if anyone had any recommendations?
I will be trying to get to Pisa on the weekend so recommendations there would be great too!
