The Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon are a must. The Blue Lagoon (like a lot of things in Iceland) does seem overpriced, but it's such a unique place that for us it was definitely worth it. I'd also recommend the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls and the Sólheimajökull glacier. Sólheimajökull is really melting - I was super grateful to enjoy it before it became a victim of global warming. Finally, we went horseback riding near Reykjavik for a half day, and it was amazing, spectacular scenery and the sweetest Icelandic horses, which are more the size of ponies!

We just spent 1.5 days in Reykjavik a few weeks ago - we did a stopover on our way back from London & Amsterdam. We didn't have a lot of time so we basically just explored Reykjavik and also did a standard touristy whale-watching tour. While there, we stayed at Hotel Reykjavik Centrum which was pretty basic and kind of dorm-room feeling, but I think just about as nice as anything there. They also had a great breakfast buffet (pricey, but pretty much everything there is). If you have a night there for dinner, I absolutely loved Forrettabarinn!

I would definitely get a car, do the Golden Circle, including Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss. Go snorkeling in Silfra in the crystal clear glacial waters. (This is the only place I did a tour ,the rest was self guided) Seljalandsfoss is about half way between Golden Cirle and Vik and Skogarfoss is near by too, both beautiful waterfalls. Then you could overnight in Vik and turn around from there. The other option is to do the Golden Circle, then go the other direction to Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Here's some pictures and recap I did a while back: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/iceland-picture-recap/

Yes! I went by myself in sept 2014 and it was amazing! The kids are waking up from nap so I'll respond more in depth in a little bit.

There's a really good seat sale right now with Icelandair so we are thinking of going for 5 nights at the end of August. Without the kids!! 🎉🍾🍷

I am a bit lost as to what to do when we are there though . We'd probably rent a car and go see some volcanos, glaciers and hot springs - but does anyone have specific places/tours/hotels/restaurants they would recommend ?
