I grew up loosely religious celebrating Christmas and Santa. My husband and I are not religious and we do minimal celebrations. We still give gifts, but don't do Santa. I would do away with the whole holiday all together, but my husband still wants to do parts of it (gifts, tree) out of tradition. We live in a very Catholic country so Christmas is big here and it's hard to avoid things like school celebrations (2 this month) and the Christmas markets, but I see these things as more cultural than religious, if that makes sense.

I grew up Catholic, with involved big Christmas celebrations. My husband is Jewish and we decided to raise our kids Jewish. We will attend Christmas dinner at my parents' house and my husband has attended Christmas Eve mass in the past, but we decided not to do any other Christmas related activities. (No decorations at our house, no Christmas related activities, no presents, and we've asked that my family not give us/our kids Christmas presents.)

I'm intellectually fine with our decision, but I still get sad thinking about the things I used to enjoy about Christmas. (Which maybe gives me a taste of what it's like to not be part of the dominant culture, and then I feel terrible for feeling sorry for myself!)

Anyone else give up Christmas, or some other part of the culture you grew up in? How do you feel about it?
