My best friend is CDing with prefolds and covers and has spent around $150. We have BG 4.0s and spent ~$350 on the diapers (more on accessories).

I've heard of Econobum cloth diapers but never tried them myself. They are $10 each and includes a prefold.

@Thehistoryofus: Agreed. Wait for sales. All my diaper covers were about $10 each even though they are sold new for $15--I just wait for sales.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Thirsties Duo Inserts. Double insert basically of microfiber and cotton/hemp.

I didn't want to CD with prefolds and flats. So the biggest way I saved money was buying used to try out diapers. Watch some buy/sell/trade groups on facebook and you can easily get a good idea for prices. Just be sure to be picky because deals do come all the time.

I try to spend about $10 per pocket diaper. I've been pretty lucky to watch sales and be able to do that. I have about 30 diapers though so thats about $300. I use liners instead of a sprayer so that is about $10/month.

@anonysquire: No idea. I've only every used the microfiber ones from chinese diapers. Hemp is good for long-term absorption like overnights but they aren't as good for catching fast leaks. Microfiber is stay-dry, so it keeps the dampness away from their skin a little better but it doesn't hold as much. It's just kind of trial and error to find out what you like best.

@anonysquire: The thing with Alvas is you want to buy better inserts. I have a couple chinese-made diapers and the inserts that come with are CRAP. The covers are fine, but you want to buy nice inserts so they don't leak.

I went for convenience, one-size, pocket, but I bought most of mine used. I think I have 29/30 diapers for my 6 month old and 6 of them are new (bought on sale). I do diaper laundry every other day or every 3rd day.

There are tons of FB swap groups. Diaperswappers, ebay, etc. You can find them used all over.

I did gdiapers, skipped newborn, bought the 6 pack of medium pants and 24 inserts. I waited until diapers.com had a promo, I want to say it was 20% off?

@anonysquire: 100 diapers! That's a lot! You do know that you have to wash them pretty often know matter what anyway or they get yucky, right? I have 30 and I consider that to be a lot of diapers.

I have no advice on budget diapering. I went with convenience, all in one, one size. It was the easiest way to get dh on board!

When I finally get pregnant I am going to buy directly from China. I am going to buy alva diapers. Similar to kawaii. From what I have read they are great for the price. For like 100 diapers I think it will cost me $350. I just want a lot, and can't decide on patterns. Anyways there is a website alvababy.com that has cheap alvas.

One word - Kawaii!

Look up kawaii diapers, they are a very cheap (but still quality) brand of diapers that makes pocket diapers for sooo cheap. Love them.

I cloth diaper *because* I am on a budget.
I spent $200 initially, and $200 when he outgrew the NB and small size.
I bought an expensive brand (gDiapers).
Medium: I have 10 covers, 16 plastic liners, 18 cloths, and a couple packs of flushables (disposable inserts) I had 8 but wanted to not have to do daily laundry.
Small: 7 covers, 13 cloths, 12 liners. plenty.
newborn: 12 covers! (fit with small inserts) and you definitely need at least 12.
Now that LO is in the mediums, I only have to do laundry every other day (but usually do daily laundry anyway).

LO is 4 months. I did the math and my NB/smalls ended up costing me more than disposables but my LO turned out surprisingly big and is growing surprisingly fast.
NB/Small cost per diaper: 35-37 cents each (based on average diapers/day)
Medium cost per diaper as of today: 58 cents each
By Nov 4, we will break even with disposables that cost $0.34 each
By Jan 6 we will break even with disposables that cost $0.20 each
And by the time LO is 1 (the mediums should still fit even if he keeps being huge), the diapers will be down to 11 cents each.

**It may have been cheaper to skip cloth in the beginning.

The cheapest way to go is prefolds + covers. You can get 3 dozen prefolds + 5 covers and a few accessories for under $150. We did that for the newborn stage and it worked perfectly. (Afterwards switched to a mix of prefolds and all in ones). I have a good friend that did exclusively prefolds- 2 stashes one in infant size and one in the larger size and spent less than 300 total. They are now diapering their second kiddo with the same stash and everything is in great shape.

I have about 26 diapers for two kiddos (one who is 2.5 years and one 6 months) I totally have enough! I probably have a little too many. I bought all mine off of jilliansdrawers.com. They offer a cool thing where you can try out cloth diapers for $10 for 21 days. This website also sells used diapers (which is the way to go to save money). I bought from their because of recommendations and I live in TX so no sales tax!!! I think I spent about 400 on all of the diapers (I was able to buy a few used).

You could also try craigslist. I saw some there in my area.

Good luck!
