I'm thinking about it but always seem to find excuses why it's not a "good time" for us. I need to just get over myself and do it :) Thanks for this post!

Part of what I like about the Whole30 is how it's kind of a wake up and a reset in your relationship with food, namely, sugar. Even if you don't intent to stick with a paleo or primal lifestyle, it forces you to face the why of what you eat and when and it's empowering to know that you CAN have the upper hand over food choices. And you learn just how strong the sugar addiction can be- ouch!
I'm gluten-free because of a sensitivity, but after the Whole30, I'll probably go back to eating some potatoes and non-glutinous grains, as well as whole-fat dairy and the occasional sugar. This is my first Whole30, but I've done the way more restrictive HCG metabolic program and the mind games are pretty much the same. When you go back to reincorporating non-Whole30 foods, you appreciate everything you eat so much more. Or, at least, that's how I find it to be for me.

I think the best thing about Whole30 is that it gets people eating whole foods and more veggies, but it's not something I would do unless I was having specific issues related to gluten or dairy.

@heartonastring: Yes - nailed it! The book essentially says that about legumes and dairy -- why not put something OPTIMAL in your body instead?

-----------

Some quotes from "It Starts with Food":

"During our Whole30 program, you'll evaluate how your body reacts first without any grains, then with the reintroduction of grains back into your diet. Then you'll combine the science we've presented, our experience, and your own experience to make an educated, informed decision about how often (if at all) you should eat grains".

"The fact that some societies have eaten grains for thousands of years says nothing about whether grains are actually healthy. Their eating habits reflect what was available to them for survival in that particular place and time. But surviving and thriving are not the same thing. In today's modern world, we are interested in truly thriving, not just providing enough energy to avoid starvation - in our culture, we can do that with optimally healthy foods that don't contain any of the downsides of grains."

"Admittedly, the scientific case against legumes isn't nearly as strong as the case against, say, sugar. While data suggests that certain lectins can be extremely detrimental, and plenty of research supports the idea that phytoestrogens in soy may adversely affect hormonal balance, researchers simply don't have enough data on all legumes to know how potentially dangerous they are. Remember, our recommendations are based on three factors: first, the science; second, our experience and the experience of our clients; third, self-experimentation [...] Eliminating legumes from your diet (at least for a trial period) will allow you to assess your own personal tolerance -- and help you decide what role they should have in your daily meals."

@Mrs. Lion: I've heard some incredibly erudite paleo people talk about the reasoning behind going paleo. And while a lot of people in the paleo community talk about the evils of gluten (which truly is the case for some people), the anti-nutrients and lectins contained in grains and legumes, respectively, I think it was Chris Masterjohn (a paleo heavyweight who has his PhD in Nutritional Sciences and is a former vegetarian) who put it best when he said (paraphrasing), "It's not that grains are necessarily evil, it's just that I would much rather fill my plate with far more nutrient-dense foods." And I think he hit the nail on the head.

As for low-fat dairy, that's not something I could ever condone. Low-fat basically = tons of chemicals. Full fat dairy in moderation if you don't have any intolerances? Sure.

@Smurfette: I lost 2 lbs within 5 days, and I have always been a very healthy eater. Even before starting the Whole30 I didn't eat too many carbs (and if I did, mostly whole grains), high protein, limited sugar, some dairy, etc). I juiced regularly. I'm only halfway through so can't say whether or not I'll gain the weight back... but I'm feeling so good.

@Mrs. Lion: Their book, "It Starts with Food" explains a lot of the things you're concerned about. The reason why whole grains and legumes are bad has to do with something called phytates/phytic acid that inhibit the absorption of minerals amongst other things - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytic_acid. They also bring up points in the book saying that just because something has a certain nutrient, it doesn't mean the body can readily absorb it. Anyway, I'm probably butchering a lot of it, but I recommend you check out the book to understand their science and reasoning behind why they've chosen to eliminate certain food groups.

I can understand the skepticism, but it's only 30 days... no harm no foul. If you don't see changes or don't feel better, you can easily revert back to your normal diet! I ate tons of veggies and was really healthy before, and it did nothing for my eczema. Something I'm eliminating must be helping - I truly believe that.

@mrs. lion, I encourage you to check out Mark Sisson's Daily Apple. He refers to a lot of sound, science based information to back up a paleo/primal diet/lifestyle and the elimination of grains and legumes and such.

Primal actually includes full fat dairy, if you're more interested in that. I personally do not believe diary is an issue unless you have a dairy problem, like are lactose intolerant. I like me some cheese :)

@Mrs. Lion: Thanks for posting those. I was seriously considering it as well, but we already eat a "real food" diet and I have a feeling that replacing legume protein with meat isn't actually going to do much good (for me at least).

I was considering it...but then I read stuff like this...and lots of others...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/20/paleo-diet-healthy_n_1898529.html

http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2012nl/jun/paleo2.htm

http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/diet-review-the-caveman-paleo-diet?page=2

After lots of reading, I have a feeling that people are seeing results (especially allergy related) because they are adding more good stuff, not because they have eliminated supposed "bad" stuff, although by eliminating grains you also eliminate processed stuff that really is bad, so it could be a little of that too. I just have a really really hard time believing that low fat dairy and whole grains are causing poor health.

It sounds so nice though...I was really considering it until I read about all the dangers :(

@Mrs. Blue: I am starting soon. I have been eating mostly Whole 30 approved for the past week (with a little maple syrup and white potatoes). I may still have white potatoes or oats if my supply seems to suffer, but I plan on trying it without first. I started a pinterest board for ideas/inspiration!

I don't think all of these fit the Whole30, but they are close or could be adjusted.

@Mrs. High Heels: Maybe I should try to do it DURING Thanksgiving, so I'd have an excuse to not eat so much! Haha

I would really like to, but time is a problem for me. I also work until 9 pm every day so I need food that I can prep in advance and being to work. Such a change in my diet just seems overwhelming! If anyone has fast and easy recipes I'd love to see them :-)

I went and checked my list of meal items. Here are some easy ones:

-pork lettuce wraps
-grilled meat (or baked)+steamed veggies
-green chili turkey burgers (or patties of any kind, really)
-crockpot pork shoulder, broiled broccoli, cucumber salad
-crockpot balsamic beef+mashed cauliflower (use the food processor!)
-pork lettuce wraps (with the leftover shoulder!)
-stuffed peppers (with the leftover meat from the patties earlier that week)

I would like to but I think the meal planning/prep would hold me back.
