@sunshineandsushi: We are dealing with this now & it is incredibly frustrating. For us, it is the same little boy in my dd's daycare room that does the biting.

DD was bit 8 (!!!) times the first week of daycare. They thought it was because she was new... so they shadowed the biter, watched my daughter closely and made sure she had a teacher nearby, and rearranged the room. I think changing the room around helped the most, it got kids interested in toys/activity areas again. I know the mom of the girl who bit DD felt so bad, and I was really questioning putting DD in daycare. But they are in the same class again and play together nicely now!

My lo was the bitee in the 1 year old class. The teachers were always very apologetic about it and said they were working on it with the biter. The teachers just watched the biter a little more and if they saw him getting close to another child, they interfered. Things still happen, though. I hope the little biter gets through the phase quickly!! It's no fun for parents on either side. :(

@sunshineandsushi: actually that has happened before and it was extremely difficult for the parent. No one wants their child to bite and having another parent come after you makes it even worse.

R was bite 2 times at her old day care. Then she did the biting at her new one. She seems to have stopped but still gets bit. I think I know who is doing the biting since I think one kid is the only one will all the teeth (minus 2 yr molars).

R's teachers shadowed her at school. They had a class lesson on biting is bad. We also read a couple biting is bad books to her at home. I think the books helped. Maybe the teacher can suggest them to the parent's of the biter.

Thanks everyone!

@DillonLion: I'm sure it's not fun to deal with on either side of the situation!

@lucy123: @locavore_mama: they do have a policy not to tell who did the biting, but I'm on really good terms with their teacher and I guessed correctly, so I do know which child it was. I agree, it's not like that means anything! What, am I going to target his mom in the parking lot and give her a talking to? Haha.

It actually helped me to know which child it was because this is the youngest one in the room, versus one of the older one's.

@travelgirl1: @twoofeverything: The director wasn't in when I dropped them off this morning, but I did talk briefly with one of the teachers and suggested the shadowing plan and she was very supportive of it. So she's going to bring it up with the director so that hopefully when I catch her, they can already have talked through some different ideas. At this point, they are trying to keep the biter separated from my kids as much as possible, but that's pretty difficult, IMO. It only takes one second! And the bites have occurred so far while the teacher has been occupied changing another child's diaper or something similar.

This is just such new territory for me! My boys beat each other up all the time, but they've never bitten!

I've been on both sides!
I was a daycare director, and at our school, we would assign one of the "float" teachers to be a shadow for the biter for a week or two. We also worked with the parents of the biter a LOT...they got a free book (Teeth are Not for Biting), we encouraged them to send teether toys, etc. Also, our Toddler 1 room (ages 12-24 months) ended up separating into two groups -- essentially one teacher took the younger kids, and another teacher took the older kids. The room was basically divided by bookshelves and large toys during play time, and with that method we were often able to separate the biter from the kids s/he targeted. (Often - but not always -- the biter was younger and simply bit because they didn't have the language to deal with their frustration any other way.)
Aaaaaanyway...after all that, I was SOOOO sure my kids wouldn't be biters.
Joke was on me.
DD bites her twin brother alllllll the time. It happens in the blink of an eye, often when I am within arms reach and watching her. It happens fast, and even when I see it happening, I can't always get to her before she gets her brother. ALMOST ALWAYS, it's because her brother has grabbed her toy. She wants it back and doesn't have the language or self-restraint to handle it any other way. It's always worse when she's teething.
Our strategy is to be actively involved when our twins are playing together. When she's in a biting phase, I don't let her out of my sight. We've also spent tons of time teaching her some words that help her manage: "share," "mine," "trade" have been the most helpful. We've also worked A TON with her brother to manage the behaviors that tend to instigate biting. I won't say he's stopped grabbing, but at least now he will give a toy back without protest.
Biting is totally age-appropriate, like others have said. I'm sure you are frustrated though! I definitely would press the daycare for a plan.

@sunshineandsushi: My LO went through a stage of biting the little girl I nanny for a lot, at least daily, it was awful for everyone involved. I shadowed her to see what her triggers were and there were quite a few, including teething, frustration over sharing toys, personal space and sometimes there seemed to be no reason at all, she would just lunge at her with her mouth wide open. Thankfully it stopped and she's very sweet and caring with her now. I know it must feel terrible but I guess my point is that there can be many reasons why kids bite, and not always obvious reasons. If someone could properly shadow the little boy who is biting it might help prevent it. Hopefully he will gripe out of it soon.

My child got bit for the first time today. Definitely not a big deal and I realize it is part of toddlerhood and hope it isn't recurrent, does you daycare tell you who the biter is? Mine doesn't which I understand as I'm sure it is a sensitive subject for all parents involved, but if it is recurrent I am curious what other daycares do....

@sunshineandsushi: we had a lot of issues with LO being bitten and being the biter. It is developmentally appropriate but that means the school should be equipped to deal with it. I would want to talk to the teacher/director and find out if they feel your child is being targeted. I would also ask what the plan is to both address the biting and keep your child safe. Biting is really hard! Good luck!

@littlek: not that I am aware. There is a max of 6 kids in their class, so just one teacher in their room. I may ask about that tomorrow. Not sure it's possible though.

So in the past two weeks, my kids have been bitten three times by the same boy in their class. He's barely over 1 year and the teacher said he's been teething and I was understanding at first. But after this third time, I'm getting a little frustrated! My kids aren't doing anything to provoke him and apparently he doesn't do it out of anger.

I think I'll ask the teacher or director about what else can be done tomorrow. DH picked them up today, so I didn't get to talk to them.

Anyone else been in a similar situation? Or been on the other side? Advice, please!
