@MamaG: just seeing this - we tried probiotics for a long time. I really wanted it to be the magic trick. If it helped at all it wasn't nearly enough. :bummed:

So after a weekend of trying to improve things, DD was sent to school in pull ups. :-(. Per advice of her doctor we've been giving her half a cap of Miralax each day, and we tried giving her Mag Citrate Saturday to help with the clean out process. It took 1.5 hours for her to drink half the amount she was supposed to, and it had little to no effect because of that. We were supposed to try it again Sunday but she just lost her mind / kept trying to throw it up. It was really awful. Sunday she actually peed in the potty once and had a giant poop in there, but then reverted back to screaming about going and having accidents every 5 seconds. It's so frustrating and sad, I hate this situation! I bought the Kindle version of the poop book so I'll be starting his sticker chart tonight, but so far, no improvements!!

I don't think we have this full on, but the rare daytime accidents my daughter has now are always related to constipation.

@HappyBaker: I am a peds nurse and 17g is one capful, which is a full, adult dose. Pretty much school age and up could tolerate that, although sometimes doctors prescribe it for younger ones if they are very constipated. so depending on how little your kid is, I would guess dosage would be a quarter or half of that. Ideally you mix the full dose with 8 oz, and the half dose with 4 oz, but do whatever will get in em!

@HappyBaker: we usually measured out the dosage in half teaspoons. I think we did 3 half-teaspoons to start and weaned the dosage down over time. When we did a heavy dosage, we made sure to stay at home (over the weekend).

Good luck!!

I know that the dose in the table above is the regular adult dose, so I was a little hesitant to go by that. That being said though, you can take a lot of this stuff and be ok - this is what patients' drink for a colonoscopy prep at my hospital and they drink tons. It might take several days to work as well, because it's not a stimulant laxative - just draws water into the colon.

I'm looking in the book and I don't see a specific recommendation. This link is from a children's hospital and it shows the difference between a "clean out" and a routine dose. I'm not sure I would be quite so aggressive on the initial dosing, and I would never be able to get my DD to drink that much water, but it's an interesting reference at least.

Do either of you know a starting dose for Miralax? I'd love to start using it tomorrow morning since I know we have a long road ahead! And do you mix it with juice?

@mrbee: that's good to know our ped might not have it on her radar!

@mrbee: Our pediatrician hasn't really been helpful either but once I told her what I would like to do (based on Dr. Tom's book) she was very supportive. So... basically I have only your family and Dr. Tom to thank for our current success!

One thing our pediatrician did do was say to me "sometimes you can do absolutely everything right in the diet department and they will still be constipated". That one statement relieved so much guilt for me!

@HappyBaker: Dr. Tom's books saved both of my kids!!

The one thing I'd mention is that my doctor was not very helpful on the subject of encopresis. The advice he did give was totally off-base! I think functional constipation and encopresis is not all that well understood by most pediatricians, for whatever reason...

I haven't dealt with this personally but a friend of mine had to admit her daughter because she was so impacted. The small amounts coming out were giving her horrible sores on her bottom :( it's scary! It sounds like you are on the right track. I hope she is feeling better soon!

I don't think that my DD quite has encoporesis (liquid stool leaking around when they are constipated), but she has been constipated since starting solid foods and definitely has gone through periods of holding in BMs. When that happens she will sometimes have a small smear in her underwear, but I think it's just a tiny bit of solid, not liquid (I'm sorry - this is incredibly gross).

I have basically been worried about constipation her whole life - so her diet is really good, I make sure she drinks lots of water, etc. I wasn't able to manage it with those measures alone though. I read the Bees whole series and bought both of the books that they recommended (one for adults and one for kids). They've both been helpful and helped me to be ok with giving her a very small amount (one teaspoon) of daily miralax - which her pedi is encouraging as well. It's the only thing that keeper her going and I think we would be in a really bad place without it. One of the reasons that I've been so proactive is that both of my kids struggle with constipation and my mom tells me that I was almost hospitalized as a kid because I was having such a huge crisis with it :crying:

I just read the Bee's series on constipation and did some google-ing, and I'm pretty sure my daughter has encopresis. She has been potty trained since early this summer but recently has started having multiple poop accidents a day - but they are just smears in her underwear, not actual BM's. Late last week she also started having pee accidents as well, and it sort of came to a head tonight when she knew she had to pee and poop but couldn't / wouldn't because she knew it would hurt and was so backed up.

I've emailed her doctor and will call tomorrow, but just wondering if anyone else has tips / advice in the meantime!
