@MrsSRS: my LO is NOT a rule follower but for some reason he really respects the boundaries of his toddler bed. We started the switch slowly around 20mo, and fully transitioned at 22 months.

Even when he wakes up crying or resists bedtime, he still stays in the bed. In the mornings when he wakes up he may go get a book or toy to bring back to the bed, but he will wait 30min+ for us to come get him before officially "gets up".

I was super surprised!! We do shut his bedroom door and he can't open it, so I know everyone isn't comfortable with that set-up but it's been working!

I was laughing at safe to scream! We don't have a crib and for a while he was sleeping on a floor bed. I noticed he slept longer on our bed, even when we aren't there (like first stretch) and I think it's cause the mattress is more comfortable! Pretty soon I plan to get a better twin mattress for his room.

At 12 months I went in to find my three boys hopping from crib to crib. We transitioned to toddler beds and it was a nightmare. Eventually we ended up with nothing in their room except mattresses. I had to remove all other furniture and window coverings. But I think all kids are different and it could work fantastically. Just be flexible and try things out.

We tried at 6 months with my son (I wrote about our experience on the blog haha) and it was a disaster. We switched him at 18 months and it was great!

We just tried this week with my daughter at 14 months. Shes also getting 4 teeth right now and it did not go well. Back to the crib for her until her teeth are in. Then we will try again. :) I am very pro-floor bed!

Yes, at 15 months. He HATED his crib & I couldn't transfer him to sleep with the bars. We did a floor bed with his crib mattress. We'd rock him to sleep, then put him in the bed & he'd stay asleep. When he woke later, he'd just cry for us and we'd put him back to sleep or co-sleep. It saved our sanity.

We didn't switch at home that young, but both of our kids have only slept on floor beds at daycare (starting at 10 months and 5 months).

DD2 moved to a big girl bed at fifteen months. She was interested in hanging out in her big sister bed and would nap there so we just went for it.
She's done fine. Her bed is the top bunk (but the beds aren't bunked) so it has rails 90% around just not where the ladder would go. The room is baby proof and she has been getting out to get books but gets back in bed quickly and falls asleep a couple minutes later.
If her little sister didn't need the crib in a few months I probably would have kept her in it a couple more months but I don't regret making the switch now.

DD will be one next month. But she's been walking for three months. So developmentally maybe I'm not totally nuts for considering this? We would, of course, basically strip her room bare because she is very inventive. I love that the crib keeps her safe. But it keeps her safe to scream, not to sleep. So.

@MrsSRS: 15 months, when we moved, it was easier to change everything at once, plus i saw him crawling out

"toddler bed" not on the floor. i put a pillow in the gap between the bed and the floor (about a foot high)

@MrsSRS: their rooms were baby proof and they couldn't open their doors
I did lay down and read stories but they were much more compliant about getting into bed on the floor bed. and if they did get out of bed, their room was baby proof. But yeah I had to switch dd1 bc she would climb out of her crib, and that worried me more than climbing out of a bed.

@brownepiano: Yes I have one rule follower. DS has never gotten out of his big boy bed and never climbed his crib. And then there's DD...😂

We switched at 20 months, so not as early as you are thinking, but we definitely could have done it earlier. What helped us was that he was super into the concept of a bed. He was really excited to have his own floor bed.

He has only ever gotten up once by himself but he seems to be a rule follower so I'm no help there. We were really worried about it though and it wasn't an issue.

Did anyone switch out of the crib before 18 months? Maybe to a floor bed? DS stayed in his crib until 2.5 and was a pretty textbook, albeit stubborn, baby to sleep train. But DD. She just wants to sleep with me. And that was fine until it wasn't. Now she hates falling asleep in her crib. I'm seriously considering just ditching it in the next six months. It could not possibly make her sleep worse. With DS if anyone had asked I was firmly in the camp cribs for as long as possible. Suggestions?
